A friend and I recently purchased the F40 that I think is the same one referenced in the Gullwing thread below. It is S/N ZFFMN34A8L0087031 and was located here in the Dallas area when I saw it and had it inspected. I won't reveal the price, as we bought it 50% for love and 50% as investment and I'd prefer a future buyer not know exactly what we paid, although it was under the $399K number bandied about in here. It has a clean carfax (for what that's worth), and has been driven under 200 miles per year since about 1999 when it had its last major service, so it is in shop now for a major service. The car has what I would call "patina" you'd expect on a well loved, but driven 11,300 mile car. Paint is excellent except for some stress cracks on the front clam NACA ducts, some rub marks between the front clam air exit gills and tub and that's about it. Headliner is sagging and the passive restraint belts don't work right (IMO the passive restraints of early 90s are the worst feature of cars of that time period).

Car runs and drives nicely, has Tubi exhaust, undertray is excellent with no cracks, tears, bent louvers, even the fragile composite undertray in front is in excellent condition. No signs of any leaks of any kind, no wheel damage and I think the car presents very, very well, just not "concours."

Sheehan data says the car was damaged by the delivering salesman in 1990 with a new front clam. That is certainly possible, but the repairs were done perfectly, with any parts that were damaged being replaced, not repaired, as there is no sign of any repair work unless perhaps the front clam paint is non-factory to a more experienced eye than mine. No matter to me, as the car will get driven and front end paint re-done at some point if/when the rock chips and stress cracks warrant it.

With 211 total US cars made, I don't know that there is a "market." This works out to what, 4 cars per state average? It is not like you can just go from seller to seller and pit them against one another. I have wanted one since 1989 and, with the help of an equally passionate enthusiast and the current economic conditions was able to get one (half of one, but I have several cars and even half is plenty). I think you have to jump in and buy, because if you wait for the "perfect" deal you will end up sitting on the porch watching the cars go by. I really think that the "market" if there is one is at least $375K for a solid car and despite the 1990 crash story of this car, I think it is solid for an enthusiast who wants to drive a beautiful car without fear that an errant stone or simply the turn of the odometer will "ruin" the car.

I will say this car will not leave our hands unless the "market" (i.e. willing buyer) goes to at least $450K and I am not sure even then will we part with this, but then again we just got it and the passion is hot right now!

For Texas folk it might make it to the June 6 Concorso and look for it to DRIVE around DFW with some regularity.

Forget about what it may or may not be worth. Drive her. Enjoy her. Compared to the guy who paid 1.5MM for an F40, never drove it and sold it years later for about 350K you'll be fine.

    Congrats!

The asking price was $350K at Gullwing as well. Not sure there are or will be any listings for solid cars at this level any time soon. In fact, if it is the Gullwing car it never even got there, as I called Gullwing and they said the car was not there and they could not give me any details like serial number until it did arrive. I suspect my seller snapped it up. We did pay north of $350K for the car.

Joe, that is my plan! I have some trepidation driving something that cost more than my house when I bought it, though. But I dread further the thought of not using this vehicle at all; what a waste.

    Good man!

By the way, in the pic it looks like the tow-hook is in the eyelet. When that's the case, NEVER try and open the front hood.
