Keep at it man. I went from 227 to my current 165. 42 in waist to my current 31. You can do it.

Try the elliptical, you'll burn more calories. That's what I do.

You've developed a positive attitude in your mindset now. You're excited about 3lbs, the ones who fail, see 3lbs and feel ashamed. Every little bit is something!

    True. Attitude is everything.

i resisted weighing myself for the first 5 weeks because I knew it would be disappointing. But now I weigh myself once per week 3 lbs is great as Im also gaining muscle so its actually more than 3 lbs.

I also fit into my size 38 jeans Saturday night. First time since 2005.

In some ways, its difficult to quantify. I'm still me. I still have to tell myself no to buying a Pizza, or going to the DQ for a nice tasty treat. Sometimes that is tough. Going to the grocery store, and passing up the chocolate milk, or even the Ovaltine... which replaced the Mt. Dew (and all soda) that I stopped drinking in 2005. I'm sure they are healthier than the Dew; however, substitute one sugar for another... I have no craving for the soda anymore, all I can think of are the headaches I would get when I see it.

When I'm doing things, I'm not getting whipped out, exhausted, and sore when doing things. My softball league started last week, and was the first time that the first game of the year didn't cause me to be nearly unable to function the next few days. I likely have better speed, and more power (although, my timing is so far off, it's not even funny). I can go for an hour hike in the back woods, and feel like I haven't done anything beneficial health wise since I'm still up for doing it all day long... except I have other things to do LOL.

If there was anything I felt "left out of" was I visited a few friends over the weekend, and we reminisced of our eating contests from college. Of course, back then I was 190 lbs, and stayed near that at first since I was taking 4 hour walks through, and beyond campus to counter my lack of sleep instead of just lying in bed. I doubt I would've won; but definitely competitive... (Qdoba huge burritos.... 'ducks' ended up winning again. )

The motivation comes entirely from looking at my gut now. That is enough at this point.

As far as feeling better, it takes more to get the same pain in my right knee. Although, since I'm a little more flexible; my weak knee (left) has gotten close to popping out again. A result of a High School baseball injury to the meniscus. I hate the idea of going under the knife. I realize eventually I may have to; but would rather that happened in 20-30 + years. Not ever 10 years until then.

You must be nearing the same weight loss I'm at, or surpassed it. 3 lbs a week would be great... with me, it comes and flattens for a bit, then again. The first 20 dropped in a little over a month I think. Keep it up :)

Took a week off... back on tonight. First set was a breeze, second I started to feel the burn, and it was pretty rough going into my normal 3rd set. Hopefully that is the shock my system needs to go into the next step. It seemed like I just couldn't shed the lbs. for most of this month. Thankfully in that week, I haven't gained either. I haven't felt this worked up since February... granted, my sets were far fewer reps than I'm doing now.

Ouch... wondering what I'll feel like tomorrow LOL.

I know this is a beginner question, but I'm pretty new to actual body building. I'm in the military and have stayed in shape, but I'm now trying to add size and then cut for definition. How do I tell if I'm gaining muscle or fat? I'm up a little over a pound since last week and its consistent weight, not fluctuating. So how do I know that its muscle?

I'd say a good indication is in your face. I remember when I was working on bulking last year, I saw a picture of myself and was pretty shocked at how bloated I looked.

You also won't notice your muscles/definition as much if you're gaining fat.

If you are gaining muscle, you should be getting stronger. I like the tape measure for fat. Measure your waist and monitor it. If your gaining fat, it's the first place it'll go to (at least for me lol).

Can you elaborate on what you have been doing to get from 200+ to where you are now?

Where you able to stick with it? If so, what are your thoughts on the program?

    Same question as above...

I've never been overweight per se, but at 27 and being 6'3 and 205lbs (peak weight for lifetime) I feel like I am slacking in a major way. So 2 weeks ago I started a basic running regimined called "Couch to 5k" in about 2 months. Been doing well with it and am surprised at how quickly running stamina can increase. But now that I am getting into the routine of having a run every other day, I really think I need to add weight training to the mix for an overall strategy.

Joined a local gym 5 months ago...but only went once! Right now I am considering getting some personal training sessions but am wondering if something like P90X should be looked into.

How I long for the days when I could maintain 185lbs without working out and eat McDonald's like it was going out of style :(
Anyone care to lend some thoughts/advice?

Initially it was just staying away from fast food and desserts and eating smaller portions. Say if I went out to eat I'd try and leave some on the plate to take home for another meal. Just the diet got me to around 180 with a very sparse amount of working out in there since I was never really an athlete, or athletically inclined. After that I maintained for a little bit before gaining some weight back to be just under 190 before I went on a running binge. Was still staying away from the fast foods and whatnot but wasn't really on a strict diet. I probably was averaging 15-20 miles a week for a few months, nothing incredibly fast but I was getting out there for the cardio, which got me back down to around 170. However it was a somewhat flabby 170 up top since I wasn't supplementing the running with anything else. After that I got into rock climbing for a while which I know certainly put some muscle on me up top and I had a great time doing it. Unfortunately my diet relaxed a bit and I wasn't doing much cardio and went back up to a bit over 180.

Last June, I don't know where I got the idea, but I wanted to do a triathlon. I started training for that which lead to lots of swimming biking and running. In conjunction I changed everything that I was eating. Got rid of all the crap that I was eating at home and went completely off fast foods for 2-3 months. Focused on getting food that are fresh and that I was cooking, like chicken fish and other lean meats. Also made sure I was eating whole grains and lots more vegetables. I'm around 160-165 right now and could still stand to lose a few more pounds of fat but I feel way better physically than I did when I was 170 after all the running. The diet is a bit more relaxed currently and I'm not super focused on weight loss. I'm at a few hundred miles of biking and running so far this year along with a few tens of thousands of yards swimming. Getting ready to ramp it up now that school is out for the summer and I'll have more time on my hands.

I definitely did a lot of online reading to get help with diet and exercise and it's certainly paid off. If you have any more specific questions feel free to shoot me a PM.

Finally got around to doing this.

The before photo is on the right, and current on the left. I have a long ways left, but the progress is obvious :)

It should also be noted that the before photo was 10 lbs short of my starting point; It was taken in July 2008; and I gained 10 lbs between then, and February 1st -ish when I started excersizing.

The week off was hard to get back into it, but now I'm feeling stronger than when I left off; if only just a little.

PS - putting these kind of photos on the web is really goofy , and I def. feel a little awkward posting them. But hey, its 100% possible to lose that gut, and everything... just don't pay attention to my goofy look LOL

    -Isaac, a work in progress
