Hi kids. I have an 81 GTSi and I am installing a new cover over the luggage area. On the right side inboard of the weather seal there is a long rod switch, the only way to describe it, it is spring loaded so that it closes when the lid is opened. It has but one wire attached to the rod which moves up to make contact. I checked it with a meter, and there was about 4.5 volts. It appears that it achieves a ground for something. I have searched the wiring diagrams, and the OM without any reference to what it is. It seems to be factory, but the wire is questionable. The only thing I can think of is that it's a "lid open indicator" switch. I don't want to cut a hole in my new cover if this is not a needed feature. I've had this baby for a little over 3 months, and I must say this has been a real learning experience. Thank you o great ones. Rob p.s. I don't think I will be cancelling my PCA membership just yet.
posting with pictures always helps the rest of us knowing what you're talking about or showing us where your concern about,
So true! I just went out to the garage with my camera in tow, but I have no idea what you are talking about. I would agree that it may be an aftermarket alarm system. What makes it seem factory? That is the area where the electric antenna is located. Could this be part of that? BTW - Congratulations on the new ownership of your car
An alarm or maybe a light somewhere in the engine bay or luggage space. In any case, it's aftermarket. 4.5 Volts sounds about right, same as I have to my headlights
My US spec 81 GTSi has nothing like you describe. The only wires over there are the RF cable for the radio / antenna and the 3-wire harness (running into the wheel well) for the power antenna. Whatever you have there is not OE. And, if it were, it would be supplying 12V to be sure. Aside from some of the elements in the instrument cluster and the Cat temp thermocouples, everything in the 308 runs at 12V ---- Ferrari electrical systems were not that sophisticated back then
I don't think that is serial equipment. For sure is an alarm. Mine don't have it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I just had to go outside and look at my car again to see what this button is,and what (mine is )nothing but a bumber that is adjustable by screwing it left or right which goes more into the body or out more so when the hatch is closed it makes a tighter fit,I don't have anything attach to it,its just solid rubber with threads
...same bumpers on mine, too. Just bumpers - no electricity running through them. Perhaps this isn't the object he was describing
Sorry guys, I wasn't set up for pictures, but I am now. After looking more closely I think it may be an alarm switch as there is an aftermarket alarm installed, and it is not OE as I first thought. As I said earlier, this has been a learning process and what I learned is to always post a picture when ever possible so as not to confuse the issue, you know, a thousand words. What I didn't want to do is cut a hole in my new cover, so I will have to come up with a different way to interlock the circuit. The smart guy knows what he's dumb at, and that is why you guys are invaluable to Dummies with Ferraris. Thanks kids. Rob Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ah yes! Definitely not an OEM part. As we mentioned above, it's either a switch for light or part of an alarm system. Also, are you missing the rubber weather striping? I noticed you don't have one.
No, it's off because I'm putting a new cover on. This whole thing started because I didn't want to cut a hole in it. I will put the weather stripping on with the new cover. Thanks Rob
Oops - I saw this after I posted. Well, I guess it takes some ingenuity to go around the conventional sometimes. Hopefully your alarm system has been tested and works well
I'm sure that another activating position could be found under the bonnet if this is aprt of an alarm. Certainly not worth cutting a hole in your new cover! Dunping it altogether shouldn't make a difference regarding your alarm, as it is activated when the switch completes the path to ground. Just cap off the wire to it and you're done. The 308 bonnet cannot be opened without opening the door, which would set off the alarm in the first place.
