Today I got to chat with an old Ferrari buddy, he told me not to leave my Ferrari tools set on the car because many of them went missing only to be surfaced on Ebay later. My 328 tool set is completed with the service light and never been used.

Do you guys leave your Ferrari tools at home and bring some thing else instead?

everything including the books and paperwork stay with the car.

I feel your fear. However, keep them where they provide the most use.

Brad, of FofSF, one of the first things he told me when I picked up my first Ferrari: "Keep these books and tools in the car, right here [tucking into rear trunk hole]. Too many guys lost theirs by having them in 'safe' place only never to find them again. They are worth an extra $5k to car's value, so keep them in the car".

and that's where they stay. I've actually used the tools at times. Especially the tow hook :( .. don't ask

The tool kit, with very few exceptions, is a cruel joke. My favorite component is the spare fanbelt. Totally useless, as you can't change it with the tools provided in the kit. The only two items of value are the flashlight and tow hook. My tools are in my car, but I wouldn't laugh at anyone who kept the tool set with the pink slip and service records.

exactly. That's why leaving them in the car is no big deal. You can just pick it up again on ebay :D

and gotta agree on belt and those [cheap] screwdrivers. I see that bent, almost backed in the Sun looking fan belt and wonder how many valve/piston damages would take place in under 10 miles if used in an emergency....guessing = all.

Last year at the Virginia City Hillclimb the cars tool kit and spare belt is the only reason I drove it home. A piece of debris got into the alt belt and knocked it off. Using nothing but what came with the car new I jacked it up in the hotel parking lot, removed the wheel and inner fender and installed the belt.

Those kits are not meant to be the be all and end all nor are they meant to help you fix your car at home. They are meant to save your butt when you are out in the middle of nowhere and they do a good job of that.

My boxer wiper pivot nut came loose both times I was in the rain! The tool kit and me under an overpass got it fixed.

Really really bad advice. I bet he is also one who leaves the service book at home when the car goes to the shop.

There is an old saying about airplanes. The 3 things that don't do any good are runway behind you, sky above you and gas in the truck.

The functional equivalent in a Ferrari is tools at home.

The owners manual has a wiring diagram and fuse and relay diagrams for a reason.

The Donner party exercised similar decision making.

I think maybe your buddy is suggesting that if you go to a car show of some kind be careful with your tools. If you leave the engine cover open, they will be right there for the taking when you wander off to look at other cars.

I know if I am going to be somewhere that my car will be open and folks will be looking, I put them behind my seat where they cannot be seen easily.

    Simple question:

As the books and tools are extremely valuable, yet useful; why not put away the originals and put together a cheap craftsman equivilent tool roll and photocopy the relevant books to keep in the car - this way you have the best of both worlds!

    Regards,

    Art S.

    HAHAHAHHAHHAHHAHHAHHHAHAHHAHAHAAHA !!!!!!

Brian you got to stop that Shizzle.

I'd bet 99.978276287514o913087509% of the folks here have NO IDEA what you are talking about. And the evil reality humor involved.

BTW, University of COlorado has the Alfred E. Packer Memorial Cafeteria (as if you didn't know). :D Most CU grads do not know. Sad.............

Yep, that's what I've done. I have copies of the owners manual, workshop manual, and parts manual (and the electrical diagrams) in the car. A set of craftsman tools and jack. Original books and tools are safe at home.

All the original 328 paper manuals are in the car but I put the oem tool kit (not the jack) and oem trouble light in a "safe place." But if you asked me at this moment where that safe place is, my answer would be (and is), "Hmm, I can't remember, I'll have to look."

I have a much more extensive tool bag in the car so I can do a lot more than I could have with the oem toolkit. So that's not an issue.

But where the heck DID I put the original toolkit? I really don't have a clue. ;) Maybe the best advice IS to keep it in the car! :)

On top of the oem tool kit and manual, I also bring an extra tool box with me always and wherever i go.
It's like an insurance card for me, I never drive without my tool box.

I am pretty happy with what Ferrari gave us.

This thread has given me an idea though. I am going to get a Fiero with a body kit so I can just leave the Ferrari at home for safe keeping. Never know what might happen if I actually drive it.
