At the start of the year before I went to America for a while, an old friend from school asked me if I could find out about his grandfather's Ferrari he used to own.
I never got a chance to look into it and I have misplaced the little information he did give me, but I do still have the photographs that he sent me.

I thought maybe someone on here with the vast amount of knowledge that circulates may recognise the car (if the plates are still on it, they may have changed of course).

When I next speak to him I will ask him the details, he tells me it ran in the Mille Miglia one year but I would need to check the year.

Bit of a long shot but thought it worth a try.

Pictures are linked because FChat won't allow me delete old files to make space for new attachments (how primitive).

Any light on the subject - or the best place to search would be really helpful for him.
If the plates still show on an HPI check I could probably find a VIN, not sure if that helps at all...

Not necessarily trying to find the car with a view to seeing it, just seeing if the car is still active or out and about still I think.

Nothing primitive about maintaining a photographic archive. Try ponying up the $15 and have unlimited attachments: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/payments.php

I hadn't considered that angle, never thought my pictures on here would be worthy of archiving! - didn't mean to cause upset. Maybe once I find a job again I can look into doing that :)

The car is NOT a Ferrari. It is a 1948 Nardi Alfa 6c2500.

4 spiders (3 of which are similar and one looks different) and 1 (or maybe 2) coupes were built.

    The spiders are 948-1, 948-5, and 948-11.

948-4 started out as a spider with a "squarer" body, and later was rebodied as a coupe with race #646, in the 1949MM.

Race #647 in the 1949MM MIGHT have been a second Nardi Alfa coupe...or maybe just an Alfa 6c2500 coupe...no one knows for certain.

The other cars in the 948-XXXX series all ran Fiat 1100cc engines in a smaller displacement class..

"Your" car is either 9481 or 9485. 94811 has nostrils above the grille, and 9484 looked totally different.

94811 ran in the 1948MM and EITHER 9481 or 9485 also ran that year; I'm not sure which...

I have been looking for 9484 for at least 30 years. It last ran in 1956 with a Wayne Speed shop modified Chevy straight 6, and is supposed to be somewhere in southern California.

PM me if you have other questions about the car.

If you twist my arm I can provide you with a couple of feature articles on these cars:

Sports Car Illustrated, August 1988, 8 pages, 9 pictures.

    Classic & Sportscar, May 1998, 4 pages, 10 pictures.

I have no way of knowing if either of these are "your" exact car.

    Great informative post above.

    Minor correction:

Chassis 948-5 was the Fina car and 948-1 is the car pictured, as it has English plates. I'm not sure which of these raced along with 9484 (with spider body; before the coupe body was put on) and 948-11 in the 1948MM.

The cars are technically Nardi-Danese Alfa 6c2500s. It is the same Nardi that was involved with the "pre-Ferrari" Auto-Avio 815s from 1940, and built them! The Auto Avio 815 motor is basically 2 four cylinder Fiat 1100s end to end to make a straight 8, reduced to under 2 liters total, and was designed by Nardi! The chassis of the Auto Avio 815s are pure Nardi! Nardi also drove one of the Auto Avio 815s in the 1940MM with Rangoni. Nardi later stopped making cars. It is the same Nardi who's company today makes the steering wheels!

Awesome! Thank you so much dretceterini, It was interesting for me to read so I am certain he will really appreciate it!

Miltonian - also thanks, I will pass this along as well, he may be able to locate these magazines (ebay perhaps) and look into it!

    Thanks again!!

Also again, many apologies for the first thread, re-reading it today it comes across SO much worse than I ever intended

This car, or one of its sisters, showed up regularly at SoCal races (as a spectator; don't remember it actually racing) back in the day. It had an Alfa engine at the time.

    Ed (or anyone else):

If you want to know anything specific, feel free to PM me. I have every etceterini book ever published, and TONS of other stuff. I have been helping Cliff as much as I can, but there is only so much time in the day....and a lot of stuff I have is copyrighted and can't be used...

PS: the Auto Avio 815 should really be called an Auto-Avio 820 (2 liter displacement; not 1.5 as the ND on Cliff's site)

Hi, if Tom from Esher contacts Peter Marshall of the Alfa 1900 register then he maybe able to put him in touch with the current owner of his friend's car. Peter was talking with the owner this week.

Thank you for your help, I will send him an email tonight to see if anything can be acheived. I am sure my friend's grandfather would be so very happy to at least know the car still exists, if nothing else!

    Thanks again to all

where did the idea that the AAC 815 had a 2-litre engine come from? All the literature published by Ferrari said 1500cc (1496 to be precise) and it ran in the Mille Miglia in the up to 1500cc class - so why do you say "2 liter displacement"?

Cliff - are you familiar with this site? I stumbled across it. Noted this here as it may be a handy reference, and is updated frequently.

I thought the Nardi Danese with basically the same engine was 1.5 liter and the Auto Avio 815 was increased to just under 2 liters....maybe I'm mistaken...

If you click on most of the car marques, it brings up a 404 error...

Martin's site is also "reproduced" on the www.classicscars.com site and shows race results and chassi numbers...
