I was thinking of buying this car, since I live in the same location. And the bid was only about 8k when I was looking. He said the reserve is 14500.00 and the bid is already there with 5 days to go. Is this worth buying since most 80 308gtbi cars in decent shape bring in the 20's. Or should I keep my money in my pocket for a better day. Thanks! The ebay number is 320377879000

From eBay, the VIN is ZFFAA02A2A0032667.

I ran both a Carfax and an Autocheck on that VIN--they both have no record of that car at all in the US.

    LOL.

Didn't look on ebay, but if they found a piece of piston where it doesn't belong, you'd be better off looking elsewhere, unless the price comes down.

Smog equipment removed, 390 mm wheels, homemade exhaust (so probably no cats) -- at $14.5K (and a dead engine with known internal damage), I think SCM would say "well sold" ;)

The 1980 injected engine is the runt of the litter....

But, if you can get the car cheaply enough I think the 76 308 crate motor business is booming!!! Call TRutlands and send them the "core"....

With the prices of 3x8s so low for GOOD ones, why even bother with this car? By the time
you fix that engine ($10k minimum - what if valve bits are found that match the piston
bits, all because a timing belt broke? Now it's $25k with new heads), fix the broken turn
signal switch mechanism (last saw one at Rutlands for $1400), put in a cat and proper
exhaust for $5k - you could have had a NICE 3x8....

This car is NOT a bargain... I can't believe it's been bid to $14.5...

What do you think the max would be to make this car worth buying, surely I think the $14500.00 is way out there..and I think the high bidder is a Hoax..look at history of bids. The high bidder ran up his own bid and has 0 feedback.

I have been watching this car the last couple days as well. First of all it was just at $8000 something last time I checked yesterday. Seems odd to me that it has jumped $6000, meeting the reserve that quickly, for an auction with that many days left, and on a car with those issues. There have been a couple 308's go for $19k recently that were decent runners. Watch out, I have a feeling that there is some tomfoolery going on with the bidding on that car.

I was going to post this car here myself, when it was still at $8k, and pose the question on how much a replacement engine might cost and the feasibility of finding one. Anybody wish to share some expertise on this matter?

Whomever is bidding on this car knows full-well that a solid Tranny, bodywork, suspension, interior, etc. is worth that seperately in the used-parts market.

Or more likely it's just a shill bidder and the car will be back on eBay soon as a 'failed sale'

Agreed. Lets not factor in the current bid price and the value of the above referenced parts yet, still the bidding just does not make sense. The bid price jumps 80% overnight, meeting the reserve with something like 5 days left in the auction. Now if somebody was going to be purchasing the car to part it out why not just spend an extra $4000 and buy a car that has a running engine that you can sell as well. This kind of leads back to my question about the value and availability of a running 308 motor.

Last time I saw one for sale it was $12K IIRC A rebuild would run $10k unless the heads are
shot as well, in which case it could easily hit $25k depending on how much must be done.

[edit] there was a 308 motor on eBay (and posted here on F-chat) for $5k a few months
back - it was a 'new spare' from a track 308. But it was for 'looks only' as it was missing
too many parts to be worthwhile to get running again.

I've got the number for a guy with 3 complete carb motors. Supposedly low miles. Also a complete 308 burn victim asking around 9k.......on the phone he told me.......no way in hell he was going to get that kind of money..............No affiliation.

I am going to look at it Wednesday eve, it seems even the owner is suspicious of the bid recieved. Taking in consideration that the high bidder has 0 feedback. I know that I should let this one go, but curosity has the better of me to check it out anyways. The car is less than 10 minutes away. I think the high bidder will retract before auction is over...seen it before.

I guess that, if this isn't your first F-car, AND you can repair it yourself, go ahead and look at it (with a jaundiced eye). Otherwise, you can find a much better "first Ferrari".

Not my first, still have my 82 308gtbi Euro, do all the work myself. Have had tons of Detroit metal. I have gotten some really good deals. Sometimes things seem worse than they really are..and yes sometimes they really are as worse as they seem. Rebuilding motors do not scare me. The skyrocketing price of Ferrari parts do.

I found some complete engines and some long blocks for around 5k- and low mileage. Can you use a QV motor in a 2v car without much mods...the digiplex, fuel injection and such. Is the upper end(heads) the only difference? And would it be worth doing? I know it would no longer be original, but besides putting a carb motor in it, would'nt a QV motor be better than a 2v engine.
