    About a year ago I had a problem with one of the rear clamshell covers lifiting up on the highway. I thought the mount bolts were loose, turns out the brackets are prone to crack because they're made of thin aluminum as well as the lid itself. Originally when I first had the car I swore they were fiberglass but that was a few years ago. I used a panel adhesive from work to basically glue the broken mount tab back on and figure out a better solution later on down the road. On May 24th on my way to a FCA meet it came loose again so my shoelace held it on until I was on the field with the other cars and back on for the trip back home. The solution I came up with is to use a stainless steel bracket that is identicle to the original part in size and shape. Ill drill holes in the stainless part and overlay it onto the original rectangular welded in place left over base and use that same panel adhesive. Smooth the paintable adhesive over after it squeezes out through the stainless bracket, sand paint voila. This adhesive is used to hold roof pans and quarter panels on late model cars so its strong enough. I thought of plug welding the new bracket on with a TIG then finishing it off making the repair invisible but distorting the original aluminum cover is a concern as well as buggering the paint up. Ill make some extras if anyone wants some (cheap), I know im not alone in this, one of the other boxers at the show had the same problem. Ill post more shots when I have the brackets which could be tonight.

    Paul cant say i have had the same problem,yet. But have had the bolts come loose. While you are at it do you know of a source for the insulation that used to fit in the covers?

    dave bendl was working on the foam and had some prototypes so give him a try.

    I would like some. I had several break some time ago. I took those covers completely off--- the car actually looks pretty good without them! Thanks.

    Would have never crossed my mind, but you have me curious how it would look. Can you post pictures? (save me from taking mine off, lol!)

    He's right it doesnt look too bad. I may take the other off so I can drive my car while waiting for the brackets. Beats looking at the car in the garage on a sunny day off. Try doing that with a carbed boxer, all you would see is a cookie sheet with wingnuts on it, not the eye popping runners of the BBi :)

    Not to get into a carb vs injected debate, but whatever the BBi gives up in carbed exhaust notes it makes up in visual aesthetics under the clamshell. Those sculpted intake runners are gorgeous!

    I agree with you on that, i dont get quite the same thrill opening the cover of my current BB as opposed to my first car which was a BBi, the injected motor looks fantastic.

    jtr and turk and i got together yesterday to talk about cars and have lunch. we did get into the carb vs inj engine asthetics debate. we agreed that the inj cars look great when you open the bonnet but all it takes for the carb car to prevail in that dept is:

    tall polished torque velocity stacks with small filter socks with the rubber gasket to affix the sock to the stack!

    that can only be bested by a true lucas slide valve inj system. we had a great afternoon ...william, it would have been nice to have had you there with us!

    Finally got around to putting the new tabs on the lid and back on the car. Nice weather here so ill enjoy it tomorrow. I snuck in a shot of the 308 too sorry :) I could have spent more time on the prep but the rest of the originals look far from perfect anyway so I didnt bother. I just wasnt anal enough today. I used a product called panel bond which is amazing stuff that just wont let go. I bonded on the 2 front tabs let it sit overnight, cleaned it up today at work and threw it on tonight after a beer.
