where did you send it and how long did it take
While I worked in Puerto Rico from '94 until '99 I saw over 150mph almost weekly when traffic was low or late at night after five Cuba Libres! And by the way I drove it daily.
No affiliation, http://www.paspeedo.com/ Good work, reasonable cost. took their sweet time. Have heard others say quick turnaround. Maybe i was the exception.
I have gone 45mph on a particular bridge in a western state over a body of water. One of that city's finest commented shortly after this event that he estimated that I was going over 120mph, but I kindly disagreed. MB
Driving from Paris to Cannes in '04 - most of the way at 240+kph (about 140mph), particularly when my wife was asleep in the passenger seat. 220kph when she was awake. A porsche GT3 and a 360 were trying hard to pass me and finally managed it when we got snaggled in traffic. Man, that was a fast run down to the south. Rented S500 merc. I imagine I got more than one speed camera ticket but I never heard from the rental company. I went past a french motorcycle cop parked on the side of the autostrada doing a full 100+kph over the speed limit - he must have been asleep!
150 mph in the 328. Only did it once for a minute. A friend was following me in his Ford GT and said he was at 150 mph also. Who knows if his speedo is off too, but it added some legitimacy to my speed.
Slightly off topic- I was a pass in a BMW going 100MPH on a road going from Monaco into Italy when we encouraged the driver to get out of the "slow" lane and speed up! A moment after moving into the left lane, we violently moved back to the right and exclaimed "OMG!!". A split second later a 512 TR passed us going warp speed. It must have been ~200+ feet ahead when we saw the TR's brake lights. We later realized that those brake lights were because of us, and that was the reaction time. I guesstimate the TR was doing 175 or more. Our driver couldn't analyze the closing speed though the side mirror. That European vacation could have been totally different. In the 308 2Vi and carb car ~70mph ind. According to Road and Track, the speedo's read low. I think 60 was 62 actual, and 80 was 84 actual, so that would put this high speed run at 73mph. I'm sure these cars could double this (wink-wink)
Here's 175.8 (281kph): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeuBNWXZ31A The car runs out of gearing before reaching top speed unfortunately....
haha Thanks, but I retired Dec 07 so I guess Im not too big a Hypocrite? Joe Image Unavailable, Please Login
165 mph (265 kph, or 7800 in 5th) indicated. She was still accelerating so I had to lift the pedal slightly. Not bad for a 35 year old car!! And Russ, if you think that yours was loud then, try doing 165 with the window open!! In Western Europe (Seattle climate). In February. I didn't dare take one hand off the wheel and hold that window switch down for the minute it takes to raise the window... The funny thing is always the slowing down. After 165 mph, 130 really feels pedestrian
Had someone elses 79 308 GTB up to about 120. I have also had my Ford Expedition up to about 115 on the Autobahn. PDG
Hey Hans, How did the GT4 feel @ 165mph? I've only taken the GT4 to 160Kph and it started to feel a little light, maybe more speed would have started to push the nose down. Cheers George
Nope, it won't Up to 200 kph, the GT4 feels solid as a rock. After that, the nose lightens up. At 265 kph she feels downright scary! Two hands on the wheel are definately required! And make sure you only do this when there is no other traffic around, as the brakes are NOT up to the job of slowing you down sufficiently when some octogenerian decides that it is his birth right to overtake whenever it suits him, regardless of that traffic growing larger rapidly in his rearview mirror... As for the light nose: I've made it a point staying below 240 kph when I have luggage in the back, as that lightens the nose even more. When going on holidays, I also make it a point bringing a big bag of tools, which I put in the spare wheel area to put some weight on the nose. Still, I keep being amazed how out of this world the GT4 must have been back in 1974, when the streets of Europe were filled with Ford Escort MK1's, VW's, Fiat 500s and when the Karmann Ghia was a sports car. And then all of a sudden this thing comes along. 35 years later, it still kicks ass big time on the Autobahn or the traffic light. Got a BMW 330i? Say bye bye. Z4? Ciao baby. Boxster? Eat my dust. Mini cooper S works? Hah! Just last week I gave a Porsche 964 a run for his money. He tried really hard (up to 155 mph) and lost big time. No sense of humor, these Porsche guys. He looked very annoyed for getting driving lessons from this odd looking piece of Italian crap Boy, do I love this car!!!
For those of you having a hard time with the conversion of kph to mph (not mentioning any names) the factor is 3280.8/5280 or 0.6214. The other way it is 1.6094. Taz Terry Phillips
Hey Taz I think I said that on page 2, 1 km = 5/8 of a mile. 256 k/mh times 5 = 1280 divided by 8 = 160 mph 256 k/mh times 0.6214 = 159.0784 mph 256 k/mh divided by 1.0694 = 159.06549 mph I think most people would round any of them off to 160 mph. Now as to how accurate the speedometer in a 3x8 Ferrari is, is another question entirely.
I'm (pleasantly) surprised that a GT4 would get to, and exceed, 150mph - that's really quite amazing. Most 35 year old GT4s are down on power with out-of-tune webers, lower/uneven compression, weak/worn ignitions systems, etc. Just goes to show what maintaining your car properly can do! My other top speed run I'm proud of is 68mph in my Renault LeCar in high school with two of my friends standing up out of the rag top roof showing bear bums to passing motorists. It was all very funny until the next day at school when it became clear that one of the beneficiaries of this little show was the school principal's wife who also happened to recognized the high school tennis team shirts we were all wearing at the time....
Mine was dyno'd recently at 213 rwhp. Considering the generally accepted rule of thumb of 18% drivetrain losses in our cars, that would translate to 256 hp on the flywheel. More than the generally regarded optimistic factory claim for a new GT4. I've got BSM electronic ignition and an X-OST muffler on an otherwise stock engine. Guess I've just been lucky on this one... Hans
Its the uniform man! haha It does something to you when you put it on. I actually hated that 5.0 Mustang Police Interceptor. It was a brute but you could hardly pull away from a redlight without turning the rear tires over. I got a lot of looks from people thinking I was being a smart---! It was constantly having issues under the hood and that light bar had a whistle at high speed so bad it gave you headaches. That was good for running deer off the highway late at night and making dogs howel. BUT…I have to say this, when that car was right…it would run! Know what I mean?
