I'm going to try this tomorrow. I'm very, very curious after lung7707's post! I will try to make a recording. Already have one on YouTube with the valves (click). Hopefully tomorrow without them
After all I said on my post... I am beginning to "regret" it. The exhaust was so loud yesterday morning on the way to work I actually put on ear plugs. I swear its that loud and "annoying". Let me tell u guys.. the first 5 mins is pure bliss... but after 15mins, you will either be deaf or you were already deaf and therefore cannot tell the difference. Looking forward to your comment after you have done it.
This is exactly what I thought might happen. I'm currently on a 600 mile trip with a bunch of other Tifosi..........and I almost unplugged my 16M. But my buddy who is driving my CS "unplugged"...........must be going deaf! The car sounds amazing from the outside but I couldn't even imagine being in it for hours at a time. Lung thats for your honesty.
LMAO! Yeah it's loud but I'm going to hang with it for a while or until I need to learn sign language.
It is very loud in confined spaces, but I think it sounds awesome on the 16m and the sound doesn't bother me at all as I have the top down all the time. I think in a coupe it would be a bit more annoying after any serious distance. However the gurgling and burbling and popping on down shifts is so sick I would immediately regret going back to the old ways. IMHO, if you have a 16m (or any F430 spider for that matter), you should try it out and then make the call after a few drives.
U know what? I am beginning to get use to the loudness. It is quite addictive. I noticed that i have been driving alot more in 1st and 2nd gears. I feel that in order to get the full potential of this "upgrade" is to really pull in 1st before changing. In the past, I use to change to 2nd around 4000 RPM then drag the car in 2nd... now I drag it alot longer in 1st maybe 6-7k rpm before changing. CAVEAT! My ECU is not stock. My ECU was remapped by DMS (UK) a while back so the performance of my car is different. The combination of the ECU upgrade and the straight thru pipe is a wicket combination. A Mitsubishi Evo pulled up by my car at the lights today and gave the thumbs up. I yelled at him and asked what my exhaust sounded like from the outside. He said its was "Music" and that it was LOUD! After today's test runs... I think I will keep it for a while longer.
I have a 2005 F430, not a CS or Scud, just the regular one, can I do this mod too? Sounds like fun and easily reversible if needed.
430 can only chirp tires? It should be able to full on burn rubber. What stops it? Electronic babysitters or no torque?
Ok I got some some results: with the standard exhaust (vacuum lines connected) 0-60ft: 1.936, 1.874, 1.983, there was a 2.360 due to sudden high RPM on take off, the Scuderia does this once in a while if you abruptly get on full gas. If you apply gas progressively and quickly from a stop, it won't do this crazy take off. with vacuum lines disconnected: 0-60ft: 2.137, 2.090, 2.139, 2.117, 2.051, 2.112, 2.364 (excessive wheel spin), 1.959 with the lines disconnected the car gets too powerful off the line, so throttle modulation is required. I had problems getting the car to hook up. If we add the required throttle modulation and the progressive throttle application for an effective launch (for cars without LC), it gets complicated. I just connected the exhaust valves back, as the take-off is more consistent, and wheel spin is not an issue. Also the 60ft times were quicker, despite running on low grip tires with the valves connected (Pirelli Corsa) and sticky tires with the valves disconnected (Hoosier A6).
Wow! So the problem is not power the problem is the ASR or LC the 430 has right? I am surprised the A6's did not help. Hey I'm running an auto-x in my 550M tomorrow at fontucky AKA autoclub speedway with speedventures. A couple of other ferrari guys may show. PM me if you are interested for more details. You may be able to work to your lauch control technique in the giant parking lot. That's what I'm going to do. I have a problem driving the 550 because it will burn rubber in 3 gears...huge torque!
Thanks for all the time you spent doing this and also all the tire information. It's of great interest and use to me.
Nothing new on this trick . . guys have been doing it on F355's and 360's for years. . . pull a couple hoses and plug them . . woo hoo.
Great stuff... so in a nutshell what you are saying is that: due to the power increase, it causes wheel spin, and therefore you get slower times. Rite? What car did you test on? Scuderia?
Correct, the extra power causes too much wheel spin. With the valves connected, it's close to impossible to break the wheel loose from a standing start. Tested on 09 Scuderia. Despite the 345 rear tires on a very sticky compound (Hoosier A6), the wheel spin was difficult to control, especially with such a sensitive gas pedal. A driver with more skills will take advantage of the extra power, not me. It is fun though, the car moves the tail side to side on acceleration, quite a sight I was told.
Great feedback... But how about the cars performance NOT from standstill... when its already moving the power on tap is intoxicating. Thats what's keeping me from putting it back to stock.
