I've always wondered about all this aftermarket tuning. I understand how it works for the import/compact scene. Take a normal car and tune the heck out of it. But tuning a Ferrari, or for that matter any top end sports car? Wouldn't the factory themselves have taken the car as far as it could go...legally? I understand leaving room for product evolution (F430 to Scuderia, or Gallardo to Superleggera, or 911 to GT3RS). Maybe it's the legal issues that leave room for this. Maybe the tuners turn a blind eye to the fine print of the law allowing them to push the envelope that much farther. It almost seems like there's an agreement between the manufacturers and the tuners so that there's business for all.

Just curious and bored on a Wednesday morning. :)

PS. I'm referring to the engine tuning. Not the customizing of wheels and such.

Leaving room for evolution, reliability, doesn't need more power (questionable ;) ), don't want to get to close to other cars in the brand, etc.

The exact reason Porsche didn't create a Cayman Turbo or RS.

Factory tunes are "safe" tunes. When a car is tuned the envelope is pushed farther....

Exactly. Reliability has a tendency to dissipate quickly while pressuring an engine to high stress levels.

Sometimes horsey power doesn't completely sell a car....

You need a warranty in there too.

Just my opinion here, but perhaps Ferrari engineers/manufactures the car to get the maximum reliability based on the engine design, and then as someone suggested engine failure increases as more stress from increased horsepower/torque is also increased.

The best cars are those that offer a little under the power that can be sustained by the rest of the car.

Tuners do whatever they want because they offer little, or in most cases, zero warranty.

When you burn a candle at both ends........
