"Going for this Much", AND "Getting that Much"....Are "2" entirely different situations, I very much doubt that car will come "Close" to that extremely optimistic pricing.....Mark.

    Really?

Let's take a quick look at 512Ms available on the market out of the 75 brought to the U.S. that year. I count 3 of them in the Ferrari Market Letter: One in Black/Tan with 9,906 miles for $240,000, One in Red/Tan with 15,716 miles for $199,000 "for a quick sale," and one in Red/Black with 7,461 miles for $215,900. I also see a Red/Black one with 14,000 miles for $189,950 and the Canna Di Fucile Metallic/Tan car with 9,117 miles at $189,500. I have two of them that just arrived here: a Red/Tan with 7,939 miles for $189,500 and the Black/Grey mentioned above with 8,602 miles for $189,500. Our last one, a Black/Tan with 2,526 miles, sold for $220,000. A yellow/black with 3,800 miles sold privately for $210,000.

That's why I clarified U.S. market cars. We all know the European market is different. It is also why I gave examples of sold cars. Included were examples of what has actually been done, not what someone thinks could be done, but has not actually done themselves. I know from experience they are also color and mileage sensitive. A 19-25k mile 512M simply will not bring what a sub-10k mile car will. That is typically two different buyers. (Again, here in the States.)

The 512M you referenced in Germany (?) is a 74,000 km/45,954 mile car!! I imagine it'd have to be priced quite a bit lower to sell too! Furthermore, 512BB prices have nothing to do with it. Those are a whole other roller coaster ride.

My point was simply to respectfully demonstrate today's current market with actual numbers and experience in dealing with them.

    Randy,

I'm a bit lost, these cars are 14 years old; why haven't any of them been driven? They have between 200 - 1000 miles per year. I can understand a garage queen or two but based on what you have listed, its par for the course. I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm honestly surprised and curious.

    Regards,

    Art S.

Maybe it's related to why there seem to be 7 or 8 out for sale of 75 made. They're probably just "investments", not the car to drive.

Hey, the whole drive it and enjoy it type of owner vs. show it, be judged for the exact shade of undercoating (I'm not kidding!), and lay awake at night thinking about what that 40 mile drive you took that day did to the value of your car type of guy will be debated as long as Ferraris exist. See the countless f-chat threads and Sheehan article to get your fill. Working with clients from both camps I can appreciate both. My own personal feelings don't matter and won't sway a particular mindset from one side to the other. I don't think you'll get a guy who polishes his nuts (so to speak) all of sudden start driving his car rain or shine and vice versa, you won't get a guy who loves his car for the driving experience leave it in the garage except for the 200 miles a year he can bare to "loose in value."

Being the last of the flat 12 cars of that era, the only year for that particular model, and with just 75 brought in, the 512M has naturally fallen into more of a collector car status than a driving one. Too bad too, because they are fantastic cars to drive. What other Ferrari can you buy for under $200k, will turn as many heads as this does, is one of only 75, and is as this much fun to drive? If you've never let one loose and ran it up to its happy place in the upper rev range, you really don't know what you're missing. They create the most beautiful baritone growl. The flat motor is incredibly smooth no matter how fast it's spinning. The car has a great, flat stance on the road and grips quite well. They're also completely unmistakable when seen coming down the road- mirrors looking like winglets in the air, and that very wide rear end taking up nearly the entire lane! To be cold and analytical about them- especially from strictly a value/investment standpoint- really misses the point of their existence altogether. You either have a love for them or you don't. Same with any Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc!

Personally, I think it is the ugliest TR made, period. I wouldn't own one and at those prices, there are other F cars much more worthy.

I think the value is purely the 'specialness' factor. However, I note that the Steve Harris Imports "M" red/tan 30k mile car was left out of this discussion. It was, as I recall, around $150k and just sold to an acquaintance earlier this week.

I too, don't quite love the looks, except the rear lights. We're all fans of our own stuff, and to my eye, the 512TRs have a nicer look than the 'M' cars. I guess as 'normal' TR owners, we should all be applauding what they bring.

That car wasn't available when I compiled my quick list since it had already sold. I'd say that's pretty decent for a 30k mi car. More than I would have thought. That's good to know.

Concerning their looks, no where do I (nor would I) claim they are the most beautiful Ferrari ever made. Just look how long it took some of them to sell when they were new! I do agree the 512TR is a really great car as well and certainly a bit less money. I fall in love with them every time I drive one. (That can be said of a lot of these cars though. They each have their strong points... well, most of them anyway!) ;)

Then you had better buy this one then ! - It's the ONLY one with Grigio Scuro Letaher, all 16 other Nero 512M's had Tan Leather, except for #32,#39 & #67 which had Nero Leather.

    Good Luck,

    Argento

Hey Randy, did I talk with you about Gen 2 Vipers a couple years back? I know, hard to remember the thousands of phone calls since then, but your dealership (pretty sure it was you guys) was over-the-top helpful. I sent a glowing testimonial. Anyway, just a curiosity. On point - -

The OP loves the "M" cars, and that's cool. My friend DID end up getting the Harris car (left a healthy deposit anyway) is a viewer here and will post in due time. He loves the look and the specialness. He said he did NOT like the rear end! So, to each his own.

I agree that the 512TR is one special beast too. Smooth doesn't begin to describe it. I've got a 7 hour drive to make next week (3.5 each way) and am half tempted to take it. This is a confidence I've not had in some other Fcars.
