I'm trying to close the purchase of a Mondial. The carfax report doesn't match the work invoices - different mileage/service dates. It's a very low mileage car. I'm told the car was registered to the first owner in May, 1988, and the first work invoice is dated May, 1988, but the plate in the inside of the door has a date of July, 1988. So far the dealership says they can't explain the carfax discrepancy, other than possibly an error in transcribing the VIN (which sounds suspicious and unlikely). Any idea what might explain the manufacturing date of July, 1988 and first work invoice of May, 1988 ?

I guess with the Vin Number Maranello can give you dates of manufacturing, shipping and even sales. The car was regsitered for warranty cover.

What does the first page of the owners manual say regarding date sold? There should be a correct VIN sticker there and date written by the selling dealer.

FWIW, I don't think Carfax is super reliable when it comes to 1980s cars. Are you saying the Carfax VIN doesn't match your car?

Unfortunately there's an odometer premium for low-mileage Ferraris that encourages fraud. Not saying that's the case here, but you'd better have no doubts if you're paying that premium.

I am planning a trip this weekend to visit the dealership and will check the owners manual.

The Carfax VIN matches the Mondial I am looking at, but the 5 service dates and mileage shown in the report don't match at all with the service dates and mileage shown in the work orders produced by the dealership, which by the way serviced the vehicle.

No, I only got the Carfax report as one way of checking up on the vehicle. I have an appointment to take it to an authorized Ferrari dealership in a couple of weeks to do a full PPI on it.

My suggestion is have it checked out, or check out the conditions yourself. Take Carfax reports with a big grain of salt. It is not the bible of what car's health or history. you are buying a used car, check the conditions.

I agree here and with Bullfighter. IMHO is carfax is a bunch of Bull***t. So many people out there have the means to have their car (any car) worked on and never have it reported.
