My A/C compressor on the 348 spider died. They can't refill it anymore.
Which compressor does Ferrari use? Is there a cheaper way than ordering it at Ferrari?

I cant be certain with the 348 but the 308/328 used either York or Sanden,,You should be able to retrofit a Sanden but will probably have to use your existing clutch/pulley as this is a specific errari part,at least on the 308/328 series it is.

I would think it is a Sanden. If not I bet you could get one that fits. If you have the old unit I bet they could match it up. I would think you are talking maybe $200-300 for one. Good luck

Thanks! I dropped them an email.
Those prices are a lot better than the OEM Ferrari product. I will let you know what they say.

It is a Sanden, the fault with yours is the electro-magnetic clutch on the front is faulty

When they serviced it they tried to refill it, but it did not work.
There seems to be a problem with the clutch. They said that they could order a different one for around £ 350,-, but it is still not there (after 4 weeks).
Now I am looking for another one myself.
Do you know which type from Sanden I should look for?

If in fact it is the clutch then I'm afraid you have no other option than original Ferrari. At least up until the 328's the clutch was an OEM part only, probably the same for the 348. Perhaps an electical issue with the clutch? If the system can't hold a recharge of refridgerant that has nothing to do with the clutch, means you have a massive leak somewhere! The clutch has an auto shutoff when the system is low on charge as a measure to protect the compressor.

    Ok, interesting. :):)

They charged the system, but the compressor will still not kick in because the clutch is not working?? If I understand you correctly? :):)

    Thanks for explaining Carl. :):)

It looks like the parts for a new clutch are difficult to find and expensive. Probably the best thing to do is replace the compressor with an aftermarket Sanden.

One more question. They ordered a new compressor for me. It is exactly the same type and has the same diameter. The only difference is that it has 6 instead of 5 grooves. Can this be a problem?

My car returned from my local mechanic today. He installed the compressor and the air feels cold. :)
He charged me € 400 for installing, filling and testing the system. He also noted that he had to change the head of the compressor (he took it from my old compressor) because the two connection hoses would not fit. I did not expect this because the connectors looked identical. That makes it a total of € 950 for a new properly working a/c compressor. That is not too bad is it?

Furthermore I noticed that the green light of the a/c switch seems to dim shortly after I pressed it. If I press it again it lights up again. Is this normal?
Do you guys keep it on the a/c when you drive it with the top down? And do you use the a/c or the risc switch for maintaining the temperature in the car?

    Thanks.

    Ton
