After purchasing a 2000 550 at the end of 2008, I removed the center resonator and replaced it with a Hyperflow x-pipe to get more sound out of the beast. The increased volume and quality of sound was a nice albeit moderate improvement. The 550 was awakened yet still tame.

On Saturday, I took the 550 back to Adam Cox at Ferrari Tech to install the Novitec exhaust. The sound is, in my opinion, nothing short of stellar. Deep and throaty at lower RPMs and, higher up, like a screaming banshee on pro athlete-level steroids.

Stock cans were 33+ lbs. each and the Novitecs 18+ lbs. each -- net savings of 30 lbs just with the can change. I don't know the exact weight saving of the x-pipe vs. the center resonator, but I would guess another 35 lbs. savings. I will weigh the resonator next time I'm at the shop. The x-pipe was featherweight light.

The Novitec 90mm pipes fill the rear valence slots nicely and the screens were replaced with a coarser than stock set that Taz included with the exhaust system.

A few before and after pictures below. I shot a "before and after video" but it's not a terrific aural representation. Plus, it's 25MB mpeg file,... :(

John- It looks great and I already know it sounds great. Incidentally, those are the Novitec screens you and Adam decided to use. The finer screens were ones my techs fabricated and installed. Should make it eaiser to clean those huge tailpipes.

You got a great bargain, as did I originally, and if anybody wants to know how a V12 should sound, listen to John's car. The car sounds really mean at idle, then as it revs it sounds like the ripping canvas, or in this case ripping kevlar, of the Testa Rossa SOHCs of old. Not too obnoxious at cruise, either.

I had withdrawal symptoms as soon as I removed it.

Man I am jealous! My car goes on the hoist soon. I'm buying exhaust parts today. I'm thinking about trying glasspacks with straight pipes and just twin tips at the rear. This would make things most like open tubes and delete a huge amount of weight too.

I have heard several 550's with different mufflers. Most just seemed louder with a drone. Yours by far is the best I have ever heard. Would need a ride though to really make sure :)

John- What you cannot hear in the video is the bark on upshifts and the beautiful burble on the over-run on trailing throttle and downshifts. It really is an amazingly rich sound. I had a Euro Daytona with a few of the mufflers removed (almost straight through pipes) and the sounds are similar. Makes an eight cylinder sound wimpy. Corvettes and Mustangs cringe. Great fun, especially for $1200.

Hey, come on down and drive it! Taz mentioned the bark and burble that isn't captured in the video--very true! The sounds on deceleration wicked nice. I've wanted to have someone follow me and record the sounds on acceleration and deceleration. Will do it soon or later!!! Stay tuned,...

Gotta say I could never give up that awesome V12,...

Man that sounds awesome for around town driving. For the long haul I think maybe too loud. I'm going to keep the stockers and then do n electric cutout and if I got lucky my car would sound as good as motoair's.

Amazingly, the exhaust note is very calm and unobtrusive at cruise speeds. If you accelerate hard the story changes, of course, but for straight and level driving it is very tame.

Next time I am in SoCal I may take you up on that offer! Who can you get to follow you and get a qtr mile run for You Tube? I would but I don't think my Unimog could keep up :)~

I was hooked on the Ferrari V12 ever since I watched Gumball Rally when I was a kid. I wonder where I can find that movie now?

Taz I can imagine what that sound is like. I put a Flowmaster on the '87 Carrera I had and it did that a little bit. When I went to the Porsche parade at PIR in '95 spectators at the track came up after a driving session and said it sounded great. Half as many cylinders and sounded about one third as good sounding as a V12 :)

Taz, Just wish those NF2s came in the deal! hahaha I love that exhaust!

Italiafan, I will try and get some additional video clips in the next couple weeks. Traveling a lot lately so have missed the mighty Maranello.
