longterm 328 values pre ABS Vs ABS

Guys...

What is the general feeling around 328 values in the long run, specifically the pre abs vs abs models? Removing the look of the wheels out of the equation will prices be similar in 10 years time? will a early 86 car be worth the same as an 89 car? (both being in similar condition)?

I own a nice 87 car now and could change up to a late 89 abs car for £2000

Just looking for thoughts on the subject?

 

People with non-ABS 328s probably think they will have more value; people with ABS 328's probably think they will have more value.

Currently, the 89 (ABS) brings higher prices than earlier cars. I don't see why this would change in the future but who know what sort of trends/fads/interest will develop (or not). IMHO the relative prices will not change between the 3x8 cars though the actual prices will fall or rise as the market for them dictates. Trying to figure out what will happen is nothing more than guessing or (perhaps) wishful thinking.

 

Given the choince between an 89, an 87 and an 87 modified to ABS, I would choose in that order.
Especially in 10 years time, I believe originality will be rewarded.

 

I think the general collector-car principle of regular production 1st-yr and last-yr cars being the most valuable (ie: 1963 and 1967 Sting Rays eclipsing '64's-'66's) will apply to 328's as well as any other average production sportscar. There won't be a huge premium for an '89 vs an '87, but I think there will probably be a small one, perhaps a little more for a very late serial number.

I think a fiberglass dry-sump 308 will eclipse all 328's in time, but I would think a good late '89 will be close.

I think in 10-15 years time the demand will greatly outrun the availabiliy of the 32's so any differences within the model-years will not in any way have any infuence on pricing. The condition the car is in will decide the deal, not the year it' build.

if you like your car and it's trouble free, why take a longshot to the future for 2000 gbp risking buying a (maybe)troubled car no?

 

The only possibility I can see why an ABS-car would be cheaper is when parts for the ABS become NLA and hard to find. That, and the convex wheels associated with it.

The '89 328s got a premium for being newer than the '86-'88 328s, and for having ABS (with a steeper window sticker, presumably because ABS used to be expensive.) Over time, I think the rationale may fade, and the original window sticker premium may prove less relevant.

Also, I don't think you can set aesthetics aside when it comes to Ferraris. I.e., 328s are worth more than newer and faster 348s because most people think they look better. To many of us, the original 328 style (pre-Mondial wheel) looks better, and we're not buying the cars for their technology (i.e., ABS) anyway.

But to the OP, I don't think the "investment value" of these cars is such that you should trade a good, known 328 for some other 328 just to have a later model.

 

If you have a good car that you enjoy just hang on to it. If you bought it at a good price, and if prices of 328s go way up your car will ride on that wave of increased prices so what does it matter if you get a few thousand more or less based on model year.

I don't think ABS will matter much in the long run. The performance advantage is minimal, and no is buying them for stunning performance even now, let alone 20 years from now. The disadvantage of having the ABS electronics fail is balanced by how easy it is to simply replumb the brakes to have no ABS. If the elecronics become impossible to fix/replace either someone like Verrell will remanufacture it or cars will go without. It is much less of a hassle to remove the ABS stuff than it is to remove bad ECU, for instance.

 

Actually, you don't have to remove anything. If ABS fails, you just have normal brakes. There is no need to do a thing except remove the light bulb for the ABS warning!

Re values...frankly I believe that the idea that 3x8s are suddenly going to be worth a lot more is wishful thinking. I believe they will continue to drop in price though, like any old car, at some point they will rise as does anything old. Heck, antique stores are full of stuff that was cheap junk when it was made and is still cheap junk BUT it sells for a good price because its old. I see 3x8s like any other old car. They are not rare so I don't see why there would be serious interest in them...at least for another 30 years.

But hey, if I'm wrong, I sure won't complain!

 

wow..seriously??? maybe you're right and our beloved 328's are just like old junk and seeing as they only made 500,000 of them I can see your reasoning....I knew I should have bought that 924
