OK, no not a Ferrari event, but the annual National Porsche Parade is invading Uptown Charlotte from June 28 to July 3. Parade is the annual gathering of the Porsche Club, Porsche Cars North America, and Porsche AG with everything from rallies, tours, shows, autocross, etc. We will be holding the largest Parade ever, with almost 1,000 entrants.

But the big event is the concours and "Paddock". This will be Sunday, 29 on the downtown city streets and will be open to the public. Concours are the white glove judged cars, and paddock are the rest of us that just want to show our car.

There will be over 600 Porsches parked on the downtown city streets, which will be closed to all traffic for most of the day (150 concours, 500+ Paddock cars). The Concours cars will be parked on Tryon from 6th to Martin Luther King Blvd, and the Paddock cars will be on the cross streets from Trade to MLK. Porsche will have a few display car at the corner of Trade and Tryon too.

Plus, I am hoping to bring Huey - our Targa Newfoundland 914 - back from the dead for display right at Trade and Tryon.

Come on out and see just about every Porsche model you've ever heard of from morning to about 2pm or so.

    See you there.

Just came back from lunch and drove down College St on my way to 6th. Quite the crowd of Porsches growing at the Westin and down College. Saw what I thought was a white (w/red lettering) '74 911 Carrera RS but I'm not the best at identifying Porsches.

Yep, all the Porsches look exactly alike. It's tough to tell the difference in a '74 911 and a '08 911.
That's why I prefer Ferraris! ;-) I'm pretty sure Mr. Saville would agree.

Well, there's something to that - no doubt - compared to Ferraris. I also prefer Ferraris, which is why I have one. Still, I'm a car lover by nature so I'm into other marks besides Ferraris.

I won't disagree that most Ferrari's are beautiful cars.... However, how many Ferrari events would have people DRIVING from California, Oregon, Washington AND ALASKA for a week long gathering? like the guy with 415,000 miles on his 1967 Porsche Targa that he bought new and has driven to every Parade since? He shows it, rally's it, and autocrosses it. and has had no major engine work on it! (like me, but I've only got 158,000 on my 95 cabriolet)

Ferrari may be good show, but Porsche is more go! (ok, enough of that, I am on a Ferrari forum.... ) :)

For pictures of the entire week, go to www.paradecharlotte.org and there's a link to video and pictures. It was a GREAT week, almost 1000 entrants, nearly 1200 cars all together counting non-entrant volunteers and Paddock show cars.

I had dinner with Peter Porsche one night and learned a lot of history of Porsche. Norbet Singer (the godfather of Porsche Racing, having designed just about every Porsche race car from the 70's to the 90's) was a great person to talk to throughout the week as I had time to spend with him. Patrick Long (races the RS spyder for Penske) came and gave us some great talks about racing and preparation.

But overall, it was all the people from all over the world that got to enjoy Charlotte, all the Cars, and all the people that made this past week special. Nadine and I had 4-5 hours of sleep each night, but it was all worth it. If you missed out, you missed an awesome week. Yes, it was Porsche's not Ferrari's, but if you own a Ferrari, you are a sports car enthusiast like all of us and can appreciate passion and commitment to a car.

I totally agree. Except in rare cases, you see one Porsch, you have seen them all.

Keep in mind, to most people, they can't tell the difference between a 308 and a 430. Most Porsche people can tell you the differences from year to year of their Porsches, just like most Ferrari people can tell the difference between Ferrari models. Honestly, even as a true car enthusiast, I don't know much at all about Ferrari models and can't always tell them by sight.

It's all in what you like, and what you know. In fact, there was a 430 at our DE on Saturday and someone thought it was a Lamborghini. Go figure....

I'll be honest, I can't really tell the difference between a 308 and a 430 until I step on the gas... then it's clear!

Sounds like the Porsche parade was a huge success. Maybe one day I'll buy one from you. But it will be an old one for sure.

Truthfully, to most people outside of car enthusiasts, distinguishing a 360 from a 430 or a GT3 from a turbo is not possible...and in most cases it would not be worth the effort to explain it to them. Many people see my car and have no idea what it is....even with the words "Ford GT" down the side. "Is that the new mustang?" "Ferrari?" and best one yet "Is that a Pantera?"
Sorry I missed the Porsche event. I would have liked to have driven on the oval of Lowe's motorspeedway...never done that.

Trevor made it to Sunday's Concours and said there was a fantastic turn out. Him and I made it down for Wednesday's Historics and Heritage Display and saw some ridiculous cars, and Matt Drendel managed to bring 8 cars to the display. Meeting Hans Peter Porsche was another high point of the event. It sounds like the remainder of the whole event was a success. Pictures are below of the Concours and the Heritage Display.

What's up with Matt these days? He was so serious about racing running the Challenge series late 90's and then running pro 2000 and 2001, then did he quit racing cold? I saw him race the 355 C's World Challenge GT at Texas Motor Speedway around 2001. I see he appears to be more into Porsche now and concours with his 935 and others. Here is his racing bio...

Matt is creating quite a collection of Porsche Historic race cars - 935, 917, 962, GT1 Evo, 959, various 944's, 993 GT2, Indy car, etc. plus a bunch of street cars including the 965 from the movie Bad Boys. He and Bobby from the former Porsche of Hickory just opened up a repair shop in Hickory. Other than that, not much that I know of. I think he should get back into racing...not sure why he ever left.

Rob, not sure exactly why he left Ferrari Challenge/Grand Am, but like Bob mentioned him and his family are building up an impressive collection of 70's and 80's Porsche ex-racers (specifically the turbocharged era cars.) I think these days his family is priority, but who knows if he might end up in another series in a few years.
