Which would post the quickest qualifying times? I know both models raced at Sebring & Daytona "back in the day" but the tracks have been reconfigured since the '70s, making a comparison of lap times not appropriate. But what about qualifying speeds? Enzo thought the 312 was too dangerous for privateers. The factory didn't have that issue with the 333s. Historians? Old Guy?

Old Guy hasn't been here in over a year, man, he's gone......

A VERY funny question you'd ask, as one of my stereo speakers has the MOMO 333SP in a cube, facing Mario's 312PB!!!

Crazy, huh? Even in 1/43rd scale the dimensions of the cars look like David vs. Goliath, but the overall airflow management is strikingly similar!

Both are built like road-hugging airplanes. What I appreciate is the contrast in design execution dictated by materials and aerodynamic theory, old school aluminum vs modern carbonfiber. Would be killer to have Mario's Sebring winner and the Scandia 333SP nose to nose in 1/8 or 1/12 scale. Just have to settle on the new 1/18th & the GMP engine for now. Speed Merchants is a great video to watch. Maybe someone attending the FCA Annual Meet at Road America can post some U-tube footage of the 333SP reunion.

Hope I just didn't open the door to something...

ATTENTION NEWBIES TO FCHAT: DO NOT INNOCENTLY POST ANY LINKS TO VIDEOS OF A REALLY COOL WORKING SCALE MODEL THAT TOOK A GUY KAZZILLION YEARS TO BUILD.

We have all seen it before. Save it. Though we do appreciate the thought!

    Kev:

The 333 SP should be faster in most circumstances. The tighter the circuit might allow a 312 PB to out perform a 333 SP.

Both cars ran at several courses in common as you mentioned (Sebring, Daytona, Monza) changes in the track make direct comparison difficult. Sebring was massively reconfigured, Monza has had chicanes added and changed over the year and Daytona has added chicanes. The track that had the least changes would be Watkins Glen and I believe the only difference between 1972 and 1997 at the Glen would be the inner loop. The boot was being run in 1972.

WGI Qualifying for 312 PB in 1972 was 1:47.3
WGI Qualifying for 333 SP in 1997 was 1:38.5 (with inner loop)

Daytona Qualifying for 312 PB in 1972 was 1:44.2
Daytona Qualifying for 333 SP in 2000 was 1:42.0 (with Chicanes)

The 333 has 1 liter bigger displacement (4 lit vs. 3 lit.) and while is physically a bigger car, I would believe to have much better aero downforce. 333 is also heavier - 889 kg vs. 650 kg.

The 333 would be WAY quicker due to tires, brakes, engine output and aero. No comparison...

That said, I'd take a 312PB over a 333SP in a heartbeat. If you've seen one run, and run well, you'll never forget it. Plus, it's beautiful... :D
