I have a 1988 1/2 Mondial 3.2, which is a daily driver, and I have a "sporadic starter". Sometimes it starts fine 15 times in a row, and sometimes it will not even turn over. Even when it will not turn over, the lights, windows, AC fan, etc. will work. Note that it ALWAYS can be started immediately with jumper cables or when put on a battery charger. To further complicate matters, if the battery charger is hooked up at all it will start immediately, but it may not restart w/o the charger even as soon as 10 seconds later (or it may restart 15 times in a row). By the way, the battery has checked out OK (twice), the alternator is working, and the starter/solenoid wires are not loose. Battery terminals and cut off switch are clean and tight.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like a bad battery to me. Has enough juice to run lower current demands but lacks the
balls to crank a starter motor. Get a new battery and you'll be fine.

Hope it will work out for you...

There is also the bad solenoid repair thread on the same page....
There are 2 different starters on mondial....Bosch and Fiat...

Clean all connections and grounds from battery to starter including in the starter solenoid circuit.
One or more are likely dirty or loose.
That seems to have fixed that condition on my Mondial 8.
