My gun is "Stolen", how does this happen?

I'd like to know what kept "popping up in the system". There must have been a record of the serial number relating to the theft, and there must have been a record of the sale of the gun to Cameron, so why did it take so long to put two and two together and find the darned gun!?

I love it. I dont know what drives people to do such things, but I'm glad they do because it's hilarious.

So what happened?

 

nothing yet, still waiting for a call. if they dont call in a few more weeks I guess i'll turn the gun in locally, get a case # and go after the gun shop for a refund or whatever.

 

Okay I got a call from the detective, and finally got a call back number. he said if he couldnt make it out today he would call and let me know. so he called and said he couldnt make it, and recommended I bring it to local PD. Duhh, could've said that 3 weeks ago. So within the next few days I will bring it down. I have a case number, and they said they would give me a property reciept. the gun will be shipped to LAPD. I was told to take info and go to the gun store and tell them about the situation and see if they offer a refund. reputable gun shop for 30+ years should want to rectify the situation. the gun will be inspected by ATF expert, and the case handed over to ATF agent who will contact gun store and find out how this happened.

I will update when I turn in the gun and talk to the gun store.

Why don't you just take it to the gun store, let them give you a credit or exchange, and let them turn it in to the police. You did nothing wrong, it is their problem, and they should deal with it, not you.

PS: If you purchase something stolen at a pawn shop, and the owner wants it back, they must reimburse you the costs you incurred. Had this happen with a laptop stolen out of the car.

 

I just got back from the gun store. I turned my gun in a got a reciept a few weeks ago. the cops came and picked it up and they are going to destroy it. the gun store offered me basically any gun in the store for a reasonable price or a refund.

I picked out a sig sauer p229 .40 (the one I turned in was a .45) this one is not two tone, but all black. I think I like it a bit better. it is used but looks like its never been touched, where my .45 had minor holster wear. it also comes with an extra mag.

the only bummer is my .45 had night sights and this does not. they said if they can get the night sights for a reasonable price they will throw them in, otherwise they'll give me some rounds. the nigh sights are not a huge deal for me, so I'm happy either way.

the gun store basically told me they would do whatever they had to do to make it right by me. I am more than satisfied and excited to pick up my new .40 in 10 days.

oh yeah the .40 grip is a slightly different shape and fits my hand even better than the .45

I would have settled for a 9mm so my fiance can handle it, but I go hiking/fishing up north and a 9mm wont to anything to bears except piss them off.

Somebody explain in sufficient detail how after 5 years LAPD was able (and willing) to connect Cameron's phone number to an allegedly stolen gun that had been legally transferred in another state.

Years ago I used to sell guns in a shop. The 4473 that each customer completed went in a file that never left the store. It seems that in order to find him they needed to follow a more or less legitimate paper trail that included a legal transfer to the shop that he bought it from. I'm suspicious of the whole "stolen" thing and would have required a lot more detail before even talking to the "detective" much less voluntarily surrendering something I had legally purchased. There appears to be some additional details missing from the "story".

The whole thing still stinks. I'm glad you are satisfied though.

 

nothing makes sense and no one is able to tell me how or why this happened. all I care about is not getting stiffed. I feel the replacement is as good or better than what I purchased and I am happy.

the officer that picked up the gun from the store called me and started grilling me all the same questions that no one else could answer. I will always wonder what the F happened.

 

The "story" sounds like a subplot from an episode of CSI where someone is trying to recover a particular gun without explaining the real reason why. I wonder who the original owner was, what were the circumstances that it became "stolen". With all the things that cops have to do (particularly in LA) it is surprising that any piece of stolen property would get this much attention after 5 years, if there wasn't something else going on.

 

Thats why ya always buy new and ya never sell what you buy. And why on earth would you go from a .45 to a .40. Thats like going from a nice soft C cup to tiny little bee sting As.

 

What I would like to know is why destroy it. Don't they try to return stolen property to the rightful owner. Now I am not one to bash the police, I have a lot of respect for LEO's, but this whole story from the LAPD sounds fishy to me.
