So does this make the car I am looking at 168 cars older than yours, and if that is the case does that make it the 759th 308 built?

thats not a vin thats the engine number, F106AB for 2 valve 308 motor then followed by the engine number, the vin can be found on the plate on the steering colum or on the frame in the engine bay, they are different numbers

The vin on my steering column is 20927 but in the US they do not accept this number . We use a 17 digit system so although by adding the engine type (F106AB) 11 letters/numbers are acceptable and the registration reads the vin # as F106AB20927. I believe the 17 digit numbers came about in 1980. Sorry to go off topic. FYI

The F106AB is the chassis type with the "B" meaning Berlinetta. F106AS is Spyder. The remaining digits are the car number. This is from the owners manual.

your vin should be longer than 20927, there should be more to it than that, look in the engine bay, it will be stamped in the frame, you may be right about the post 1980 numbers though
the number on my engine (85 mondial QV) is, 105A02400073 which is different to the vin which is, ZFFRE14D000058759

Allen please see Doug's answer. Us older pre 1981 cars have a 5 digit vin # and were required by or motor vehicle departments to add additional numbers. So they just took the engine number and added it to the vin. You have the 17 digit numbering system that came about in 1981. This is why we cannot get a carfax trace of our cars because they only recognize 17 digit codes. FYI

I guess we have smarter computers in Texas; my Texas title and insurance card both show a 24903 VIN, just as stamped on my 1978 GTS. Randy

That actually IS a complete FRAME stamping, with the addition of two stars (of the five pointed variety I might add, Texan style) :D

So its a F106AB frame, (a 1977 GTB, there were no GTS at that point) with a five digit VIN (as all Ferraris before the 17 digit format were).

That is indeed a 'good' number if you know how to read it but correctly NOT technically a VIN.

As for Texas, I have given TxDOT an education but their handbook actually wants "308GTBxxxxx" as the Vin...LOL!

A five digit VIN per "the Computer" is a Farm Implement Trailer. So Randy whoever titled your car has gone thru the same gaunlet, as I.

F106AB*20759* is what the car in question has stamped at the RH frame rail of the engine compartment.

Sadly none of the modern software tracking VINs can give you much, check the 308GTB Registrey operated from Germany or else the Ferrari Market Letter may have tracked 'For Sale' ads that give you a rough clue of the car's previous travels!

I titled it from a California title originally titled in 1985.

Hmmmm, that's interesting...maybe it was the County Tax Office that was calling mine an 'Implement Trailer'........it took a conference call to finally straighten them out!

Maybe there's enough 5 digit VINs in TxDOT's data now to set a precedent, and it's no big deal!

Anyone have any history on the OP's car???
