    Bernie Ecclestone, the man who controls Formula One auto racing, said Friday that he preferred totalitarian regimes to democracies and praised Adolf Hitler for his ability to "get things done."

    In an outspoken interview with The Times of London, the 78-year-old British billionaire chastised contemporary politicians for their weaknesses and extolled the virtues of strong leadership.

    Ecclestone said: "In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done.

    "In the end he got lost, so he wasn't a very good dictator because either he had all these things and knew what was going on and insisted, or he just went along with it ... so either way he wasn't a dictator." He also criticized democracy, claiming that "it hasn't done a lot of good for many countries — including this one [Britain]."

    Instead, Ecclestone endorsed the concept of a government based on tyranny.

    "Politicians are too worried about elections," he said. "We did a terrible thing when we supported the idea of getting rid of Saddam Hussein. He was the only one who could control that country.

    "It was the same [with the Taliban in Afghanistan]. We move into countries and we have no idea of the culture. The Americans probably thought Bosnia was a town in Miami. There are people starving in Africa and we sit back and do nothing but we get involved in things we should leave alone."

    [Max Mosley, a close friend of Ecclestone and president of the Paris-based world racing body the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, is the son of pre-World War II British fascist leader Oswald Mosley.

    Last year, Mosley won a libel suit against the London tabloid News of the World after it published photos of what it said was a "Nazi sex orgy" involving him and five prostitutes.]

    How much more of this idiot's musings will we have to contend with before someone does something to get rid of him? He's no better than Max and Max is a total tool.

    Politics are never cut and dry. There are a lot of corrupt factors influencing decisions. One thing is it's usually about money and power and never about the people. Bernie is now seeing that tyranny doesn't work as he's been witnessing a revolt lately.

    Bernie Bernie Bernie...

    Here's something about Hitler to not incite hatred...

    This day in Automotive History: July 5, 1933, Hitler appointed Todt to build the Audobahn.

    This reminds me of a T-shirt I saw. It had a picture of the great pyramids and it said "Slavery. Gets sh*t done."

    I laughed because I thought it was a funny, in a horrible but unfortunately accurate way. And I also thought other normal people would think it was funny, also in a horrible way. I guess I didn't think there were really people who would say "Yup, that's the way we should do things."

    He really doesn't think regular people are worth much, does he. Just an asset to get his stuff done. Unbelievable.

    Except for this little known fact that the pyramids were not built by slaves at all, but paid contractors and specialists. "Popular myths. Get your sh*t really confused"

    Not to suggest here that I am an expert, but the last pyramids were built at the end of the Old Kingdom (i.e. 2200 BCE), a good 1000 years before any Jews showed up in Egypt (according to the Bible).

    No. The Autobahnen just happened to go into the construction stage in 1933, planning had been going since the 20s. The Nazis mostly made more resources available. It's still one of the biggest achievements of the Nazi propaganda that even 75 years later people all over the world believe that Hitler "invented" the Autobahn.

    Would he be trying to get into Max's good books for any reason? This is probably a good way to do it :)

    Dude, I think you are missing the point.

    As for the "workers" building the pyramids, knowing how people are, I would bet they had very little say in what they were doing. I am not sure the word "privileged" is one I would adopt just yet based on the assumptions in that article. I think I would have rather been the Pharaoh.

    History channel is spot on, read carefuly: "His primary assignment: to build a comprehensive autobahn system. [...] By 1936, 100,000 kilometers of divided highways had been completed, leaving Germany with the most advanced transportation system in the world." Nowhere do they say that Todt or Hitler had the idea, they just boosted the construction with massive resources. I have an article somewhere in a magazine that draws a very good timeline but I'd have to dig it out. For a quick impression, here are some examples of Autobahn projects with their starting year taken from Wikipedia (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichsautobahn):

    * Köln–Düsseldorf (1925)
    * Aachen–Köln (1925)
    * Mannheim–Heidelberg (1926)
    * München–Leipzig–Berlin (MüLeiBerl) (1927)
    * München–Starnberger See (1927)
    * Leipzig–Halle (LeHa) (1927)
    * Hansestädte–Frankfurt–Basel (HaFraBa) (1927)

    Ironically, the biggest influence of the Nazis on the acutal plans was to move some parts around to show the travellers the beauty of the landscape. If you ever travel from Munich south towards Austria, you have a fantastic view on the Alps, and you have enough time to look, because chances are that you are in a traffic jam due to the stupid route the A9 (iirc) takes, uphill, downhill, tight turns, courtesy of Mr. Todt ;)

    Credit for inventing the Autobahn in the way we know it goes especially the HAFRABA association, who planned the Hamburg-Frankfurt-Basel-Autobahn. In the late 20s, they worked out all the engineering stuff like radiuses, angles, how on-ramps and exits had to look like etc. They planned the whole Autobahn network, it took them 70 (!) books to publish their results. Another irony is that, together with the communists, the national socialist party was initially against these plans. When Todt was appointed by Hitler, he essentially took the HAFRABA plans and assigned thousands of workers and a boatload of money to realize them.

    Far Out, I only quoted the headline from The History Channel's article. I didn't write or imply anything additional. I even gave the website link to show the article.

    FYI - I subscribe to the History Channel's, "This Day in Automotive History" which sends a daily text to my Blackberry. I took that text and merely printed it here. I have no opinion of the subject one way nor the other, so whether you disagree (as you did after my first post), or agree (as you did with my second post) with the same History Channel information each time, it is the information (not me) that you are agreeing/disagreeing with. I only relayed the headline from the information.
