My 348 speed/odo gauge work off and on. Sometimes they just jump to life and work... then I hit a bump and they go dead. I'm thinking that it is the sender unit in the back of the car. I took it off, cleaned it up, put it back in but I still have the same results: works occasionally. Bad sender? Anything I can do to test the sender or connection going to it? J
had same problem. bought this from eurospares and solved it http://www.eurospares.co.uk/searchResult.asp?M=&Mo=&A=&B=&S=130975 Ferrari 348 (2.7 Motronic) - ANGOLAR SPEED SENSOR Part No. 130975
Wait, I'm a little confused. The part I was talking about was part #29 on this image: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/images/diagrams/full/348_28.jpg What's the difference between this part and the one you mention? Do I need to check both? J
The Eurospares part is a crank speed sensor. The part you reference from Ricambi is the correct one for the speedo. Two entirely different parts/purposes.
I wouldn't think that the speedo sensor on the transmission housing would be affected by bumps in the road, but anything's possible. Have you checked the connector on the back of the instrument cluster to make sure it's tight? And have you checked the multi-pin twist connector up by the top of the left rear shock absorber, to make sure that it's properly attached and all of the pins are in their proper places?
Thanks for the advice. I have checked the speedo sensor connection. I even pulled it out and cleaned it up. I will check the instrument connection and the multi-pin twist connector up by the top of the lef rear chock absorber (anyone have a diagram?). Thanks to everyone, as always! J
What does the crank speed sensor do and would it affect my car's speedo/odo from being intermittant? J
It provides a pulse signal to the ECU to determine cylinder position in order to fire the spark plugs at the correct time. There are two sensors, one for each bank of cylinders/ecu. They do not have anything to do with the speedo, but if the crank sensor was shot on the 5/8 bank (and badly misfired or shut the bank off) it could affect the RPM gauge. Crank sensors themselves rarely go bad, but the wiring and terminal connectors to them can fail from engine heat and environmental conditions.
Yes, sure is possible.......´cause that is what happened with mine also a couple of years back. Left wheel and liner off.........takes a minut to change........100 USD for the sensor and ready to go. Good luck!!!! //B//
