I am in the process of fixing the steering rack in my 1980 308 GTSi I was wondering if there is anyone who knows if the rack is made by Ferrari or Fiat. I was also going to address the bushings in the rack is there somewhere that these bushings are available? It is our belief that the bushings are failing I think they need to be replaced.

Mine were made by Cam Gears LTD or TRW.

The passenger side bush is made out of plastic and will more than likely be disintergrated.I dont know if anyone has them of the shelf, but I had my one in the GT4 made out of Bronze.Others have also made them out of delrin. The rack is also used in the Detomaso Pantera. If you do a google search,I believe there is someone that makes them for the Pantera. Also I think Superformance in the UK have replacement racks.

I'm sure you've diagnosed the rack to be faulty but just in case.....

I was just about to pull my steering rack out due to excess play when, with the help of a co-worker I noticed a couple of items.

    1) The nut that holds the steering boss on was loose, giving some play &
    2) The nut that clamps the steering shaft onto the splined input on the rack was also loose.

I tightened both of these up and no more play in the steering, all good.

    Worth a try?

Yep I did exactly what George did, unfortunaely the rack was worn. With the front of the car in the air, turn the steering full lock to the right, then turn slightly to the left, just off the lock.Grab the passenger side front wheel and turn it as if you were trying to steer the car from left to right.Observe the movement of the control arm.If there is movement up and down, then the passenger side bush is shot.

Norwood sells replacement bushings made out of delrin. I've got one sitting in drawer for the a future rack rebuild.
