I recommend anyone who playes on console games sometimes to buy a good steering wheel (anything logitec, i can vouch for them personally. i've used many different steering wheels (had about 8 right now) and only found the logitec products worth buying. most durable and accurate wheels under $500!) and Rfactor (and download the free demo of www.liveforspeed.com) both have excellent physics (lfs has the absolute edge though, much better). Rfactor has a lot of (real) cars and tracks for download which lfs hasnt.

I currently play the F1 2007 mod by MMG a lot (free to download also!), which looks very good and provided you have all assists turned off (abs, TC and stability control) it provides for excellent and competitive racing. Turn stability contol on if you're not good though...the cars are a real handful with it turned off, entering turns a la hamilton is very common if you're not careful with the brake pedal. also modulate the throttle or else you will spin out very quickly!

Iracing is a very popular and competitive online racing series (absolutely no annoying kids who will crash in to everyone in the first corner so they try and win the race that way). I cant try it currently as i dont have a broadband connection.

If you have some friends to race with or meet some people online who are often in the same server (for example a ferrarichat server), it can be very addictive and countless hours of fun!

Once i get broadband and my computer sorted i'd be happy to sort out a server for ferrari chat on rfactor and maybe LFS.

    Bump again.

The picture below was labelled as an untouched screen shot a long while ago.

Have they released anything? What's anybody using for virtual racing?

I would think that things have changed a lot since this thread began, and I would love to hear what people are using for racing simulation.

    Thanks!

iRacing is the bees knees of racing sims but its not priced like a game.
A usefull driver development tool limited by the number and location of tracks they've the laser mapping for.
I know of one gentleman historic owner who had his car and the track it would debut on in australia mapped privately with iRacing, during the car's restoration in australia.
He flew out from the US and saw both car and track for the first time the day he had to race it. Such was his practice with iRacing, he won both of his races on that first day.
Hopefully that track will soon be added to those in use.
I will find the value much enhanced when more tracks outside the US are available.

That is coming, albeit slowly. See http://www.iracing.com/newsEvents/index.php and here: http://www.virtualr.net/iracingcom-track-licensing-background-info/#more-4387

That said, I was able to use Bob's wonderful laser scanned Eastern Creek to help one of my American clients prepare for the Tasman Revival last November on rFactor. He might not have been as successful as your example, but in his first race on the circuit in damp conditions and first race in his 3-liter BRM P126, he acquitted himself well, certainly better than had he not been prepared.

I use iRacing almost exclusively for US circuit training, its THAT GOOD!

One wonders if all the US drivers debuting at Eastern Creek that meeting pretrained with iRacing.
When Eastern Creek is available it should boost aussi usage.
As great as it will be to have great circuits like Indy, Silverstone, Spa etc its really other countries drivers who want them most. Within each country its the next level down of tracks needing travel or high daily charges to train on thats most desired, I believe.

It really is a sim with physics a cut above everything else.
Some of my CGI models have been made for flight sims currently developing. The possible atmospherics are amazing.
I've seen crosswinds on runways and realistic turbulence behind WW2 bomber streams.
Wont be long before we have realistic weather in sims like iRacing.

I would like iRacing to get finished with Mosport and Mid-Ohio already.

I really want Mid-Ohio. That's the track I did 5 Skip Barber days on, so I know it fairly well.

I really like iRacing. I used it to practice Sebring for One Lap of America last year, and I am using it to learn Road America and Mid-Ohio (once the track comes out) for One Lap 2010.

    Agreed on a sim subsection.

I used my sim to get familiar with Laguna Seca before this past weekend's race. I had fast lap by Practice 2. I'd never driven the track nor that type of car prior to the race meeting.

    Sims FTW.

Let me also be perfectly clear. I had help from one Dr Who, who provided specific, subtle insights into the car and track known only to excellent drivers.
