Nah that's not LH, he works best under pressure. After the Japanese GP everyone was ripping into him for his 'dangerous' driving, what did he do?

    Pole Position
    Fastest Lap
    RACE WIN!

If you don't see his talent, no one here can show it to you.

Not even close to it. Just another driver with some talent to fall into a seat of a spectacular car at the moment.

    That's Jenson Button!

Only time will tell though, I feel he's great, and I predict he'll win a race before the end of the season.

Didn't Matchett comment that he wasn't so much interested in parking it as he was in "saving the car" (i.e. giving up on running hard and just bringing the car back flawless)?

I can see the fire in that comment... he wants to WIN, the warrior spirit :), not screw himself tomorrow trying to salvage a no-win situation today.

    maybe...

Yes, as I said it might have been the smart move but Isn't the overwhelming desire to win against all odds one of the marks of a great driver?
BTW Isn't the fact that quitting a race can be the "smart" move a sign of just how F'd up the rules are?

IMO the only reason Matchett said anything about that was to try to stop Hobbs from sounding too condescending when he said poor old lewis just wants to park it and call it quits. Honestly I think Hami was just bummed about his first lap blow out and didn't want to have anything to do with the rest of the race since he was already a lap down on his second lap. I'm sure the pit crew and Matchett were just trying to spin it the other way.

When LH hinted he wanted to come in the Mclaren pit basically told him to STFU and keeping driving-exactly. Could you imagine senna/schuey asking that?
Then again they weren't going home to nicole...

Hammy was only one safety car/rainstorm from potential points.

The McLaren was a "spectacular car"? That's news...it was competitive last year, but nowhere near dominant. It wasn't even the best car on the grid...that was the Ferrari.

If it was a spectacular car, Alonso would have cruised to the WDC in 2007.

Oh the same old **** again ..LH is a racer he nearly pulled it off at the start right! Thats what I want see not some limp wristed attempt!! Oh dear he nearly hit someone BS...Webber was ok in my book as well! passing should be encouraged along with reasonable defending action. The stewards rulings need a revamp pronto and be made consistant..Button stuck it to Massa when it mattered as well..LH is a great passer and driver, he went for it! It went tits up, so what at least he tried, he knew that so give it a rest arm chair experts like you could come anywhere near the skill he has.

Jenson was impressive his rookie year and did not do much after wards. A lot of Jenson's success this year has to do with the long development time that Honda had started last season for this years rules. Now that the other teams are catching up Brawn GP is falling back as is Jenson.

I am personally very disappointed in LH's request.

He has to realize that he has HUNDREDS of people that have busted their balls to improve the car to where it is now. For him to attempt to quit and throw away all their work with a car that is not competitive because of his mistake at the start is unacceptable.

Ask yourself how you would feel if you and hundreds of others at your company had worked your tail off to improve things deep into the night, and then your athlete screws up and then wants to quit... They (the HUNDREDS of people of McLaren) haven't thrown in the towel on the season with no realistic championship hopes, and with him being the driver and face of the team he shouldn't either.

LH is a very talented driver. Unfortunately he hasn't had time to build up the experience necessary to efficiently develop the car as a Senna/Schumacher/Lauda/Prost/Alonso would. As others have mentioned, the previous drivers are capable of developing a car and taking it forward (look at last year where the Renault started as a **** car and by the end of the year Alonso had a podium/winning calibre car). Unfortunately this year has shown the (possible) lack of ability of Hamilton to develop the car as well as the drivers mentioned... however... it should also be remembered that the lack of testing has prevented the larger teams from being able to test parts and close the gap to this year's cars that nailed it from the start (RBR and Brawn come to mind).

I am EXTREMELY disappointed that a reigning World Champion would want to quit a race. He owes it to the hundreds of people back at the factory to fight from start to finish... just as they have working long hours to improve a car that has no chance at a championship... it's called being a professional...

Are we saying here someone actually heard Lewis saying he wanted to stop racing in this race, or was it to come in early to pit.

If so please provide a link or something otherwise it's hearsay.

As regards to making improvements to the car as I can recall because of the ban on testing it was quite plain to see a lump of fibreglass on the front of his McLaren on the grid..just showing how desperate there are to test things.

Apparently Niki Lauda did. He expressed rather negative feelings about it as well.
Norb Haug said it was appropriate though.

It's not hearsay, I heard it too, he said something along the lines of we should save this engine and transmission.

    http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/13072009/23/hamilton-blasts-mclaren-engine-gearbox-waste.html

I guess we can look at it from both points of view but to me at least, it would be stupid to retire the car with the testing ban.

On the USA TV feed LH said he wanted to save the engine and tranny; mclaren told him "just keep driving mate and we will worry about the strategy." Take it as you will. Maybe this is lewis' way of preparing for cost caps.

As a sponsor I'd have been pissed if LH parked it.

This was Mercedes' home race and I bet the VIP stands were packed with Merc dignitaries, so of course the team wanted Hami to continue driving.

From a purely technical perspective Hami was right, it would have been better to save engine and tranny. Although I don't think that was his motivation, he was just driving in circles when there is nothing to win.

My bigger question is however: How much did the Merc guests really care about McLaren when they have Brawn to observe?

Ermm thanks Luis ..ect for the replys not as quite as bad as the picture being painted on here IMO, the rear floor was destroyed on the right side, so it somewhat explains the lack of pace thereafter. Unlucky in some respect with the clip on the wheel and subsequent position when he emerged in the worst possible track position, getting the blue flag.

And in fairness if his car was like he said driving on ice with the damage, he couldn't really test it to its real potential.

Again, why a driver should start in a second tier car.

LH could have been the next big thing and dominated F1 for many years but because he leap frogged the important development years this will unfortunately not happen. I blame Bernie yet again for wanting the British audience cause he knew he was loosing the German one with MS retiring. Bernie has showed yet again he cares only for his wallet and for nothing else.

No other team would want LH now as he has shown this gaping hole in his ability and also a massive lack of motivation and drive ... he can only hope McLaren stumble upon a good car very soon. There is a good chance that they might actually do that ... if he was sitting in a Ferrari there would be a lot less chance that this would happen as quickly ;).

A true champion never gives up. His morale and ego must have been severely bruised this year now that he's no longer in the best car with the best team on the grid.

If normal testing had been allowed, Brawn would have NEVER been able to keep a stranglehold on the field the way it did until last weekend. The resources of a team like Ferrari would have enabled them to quickly catch up, instead of slowly. This is Max and Bernie manufactured BS!!!
