When the car is warm and has been run a while, the engine tends to hold RPM when slowing down or when driving acts like a cruise control... only decreasing engine RPMs very very slowly.... when engine is cold or when traveling around town, at normal operating temp, it behaves just fine. .... only when on a longer trip or on the highway does it not return to idle as is should. ..... So it happens once in a while....not every time.... and only after the car has been sitting after being driven for a while..... I have turned it off and restarted it, but until I leave it overnight, it continues with the slow idle return. .. the next day, it operates perfectly!! Any ideas?

My guess...Throttle cable, linkage, or the most likely....carpet

Ah yes, the ol' Ferrari cruse control. LOL!

+1 with what Lane said. Then check the pivot bearing in the middle of the linkage. Make sure it's clean and not all gummed up with gunk.

The 355F1 has no cable but a potentiometer for the throttle, i doubt the carpet could be the reason ... too simple. I think your problem is in the sensors, air flow possible, and so on. I would clean the MAF first, it's very easy to do.

The 355F1 do have a cable ... that's why it is not able to blip the throttle by itself when down-shifting. Potentiometers and drive-by-wire throttle appear only on the F360.
In addition to what was said, if it is not the carpet, I would have a look and clean the idle regulator which could be lazy due to some internal deposit.

My car, a 1997 355 6 speed, has the developed the exact symptoms you're describing at idle. I spoke to my mechanic and he suggested I reboot the car's ECU by shutting down the battery for 20 minutes making sure nothing is left on like radio,a/c, lights, even HB (put blocks behind the rear wheels), and then start the car and let it idle for 15 minutes

Well, after following my mechanic advise, so far so good, I have no idle problems. So maybe you are the idiot!
