Mine seems to be binding (it rotates only so far, then it seizes and the belt slips).

    Get it rebuilt? Buy new?

    Who rebuilds these?

I suppose I could always install new bearings and slip ring brushes if I have to.

It looks like a pain to get out of there.

    Thanks,
    Doug

    You need bearings.

It is a standard alternator, , any auto electric shop can rebuild it for you... like $ 100.00 usa.
Watch the pully, , ,it is the only Ferrari specific item,,, 4 it is small.

Its the same alternator used in Fiats,124 from memory. Its not that hard to remove,It would probably take you more time to jack the car up,remove the wheel and tyre well.

Had mine unmounted while doing the belt service and cleaning things, couldn't figure out how to disconnect the wires from the alternator, hows that work?

    Doug,
Before you do anything else, check the small nuts (8mm?) around the outside edge on the back of the alternator. They are attached to the long skinny bolts that go through from the front side & hold the case of the alternator together. There are four of these, as I recall. If one is loose, the bolt can vibrate forward and foul the fan/pulley, allowing it to rotate only part way...then stopping it abruptly. If you haven't removed the alternator yet, you can try to sneak a tiny screwdriver behind the fan/pulley and see if any of them rattle or can be gently pursueded to move away from the back of the fan or pulley. If one is actually not secured, that's possibly good news; getting to all four nuts (in situ) to snug 'em up is probably not!
'a long shot, I know, but worth checking.

Exactly correct...and other than the Ferrari-specific pulley, there's nothing unique about it. Any alternator rebuilder can rebuild the unit, without any parts or informational issues.

Not on my car. Tension bolt is almost impossible to reach and get a good torque on the wrench with the AC unit in place, , and it seems someone used an impact wrench or something on the pivot bolt.

I have to remove the AC anyway for the cam belt, but wanted to get the alt out sooner and to a shop, no dice on that.

Having a lift would help tremendously.
