    Hi,

I will very soon be a new 355 or 360 owner, and I have done searches on the net; regardless, PLEASE share your collective wisdom as to the 2 questions I have about the following 355 and 360:

    1. 355 candidate is a 1995 Berlinetta with 32K miles, 2 owner, well sorted and serviced (by Brian Crall), but no history of valve guides every being done. Nevertheless, compression/leakdown purportedly fine. It is a 6 Speed, and clutch is fine. Has had engine out service 2K miles ago. Of course full PPI to come, but assume just minor items.

    2. 360 candidate is 2002 with 24K miles. Also 6 speed, and recent belt serivce. PPI done and gives it a clean bill.

Assume both cars will be driven 5 days a week, maybe tracked once a year.

Question 1 - RELIABILITY AS DAILY DRIVER: I have limited seat time in both cars (only F1 in the 360). Is 355 likely to be LESS reliable, i.e., did the design and technological changes that came with the 360 make it more reliable as a daily driver, or just perform better.

Question 2 - "FUN" AS DAILY DRIVER: This is directed at the many of you with a lot of time in both 355 and 360. With is more FUN? I prefer old school feel in general. I love the 993, and dislike the 996; I prefer the 993 because of the old school feel, lighter and more tossable, and much higher build quality. I don't get the sense this anology carrier over to the 355 vs 360. But is the 360 WAY more nimble and repsonsive so as to really push the Fun factor in its favor?

Obviously, there is about a 35K price difference, but I am confortable buying either even considering slightly higher maintenance costs with 355. However, I assume the 355 have just about bottomed out in the low 40's for the 1995's, whereas the 360 will come dowm some yet.

    THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT!

    Dan

    my vote is 360 ...

    daily driver 360

maintenance 360 (no engine out major)

    interior space 360

    sound 355

    fun personal choice

roof choices 355 ...i like GTS

355 ride is a harder compared to 360. As long as you have had valve guides and headers done reliability about equal .

However, a well sorted out 355, emphasizing the WELL, is no where near low 40's.

    What does Brian say.

IF Early 360 you might have some issues.

the 355 has a ton more than 360

    what do you like?

For looks, fun to drive, engine sound + head turning of all age group the 355 wins my vote; for reliability, boring drive and an ocasional head turning from on lookers the 360 wins my vote.

But on the other hand the 360 Stradale or 430 would be my pick if I was in the market for a change today.

I owned both the 355 and a 360 at the same time! Both are great cars but without going into to much detail I would have to give the nod to the 360 for daily driver duty.

Strictly my opinion, but as a true, raw Ferrari guy, the 355 is the last Ferrari I would ever buy.... what I mean by that is, I would NOT buy a Ferrari NEWER than a 355. True Ferrari's are race cars first, luxury cars second... the 360 & 430 are luxury cars fist, race cars second.... and FAR too refined to be a raw racing machine. and the 360 is just too damn big, heavy and quiet!
All Ferrari's are obscenely expensive to maintain, regardless of whether you have to pull the motor or not!

I think ive made myself clear... ;)

I'd go 355 no matter how tempting the 360 might be. Primary reason is a better, more Ferrari look, highest technical design on the engine, better depreciation prospects - 360 has more loss to bear - and shear numbers of production (less 355 GTB's and 1995 is the better M2.7 year).

    I am biased to 1995 355.

but get the one that makes 'your' blood rush ...... as that is the reason to buy any of these examples :)

I am surprised more people are not in the 355 camp.

    What we know....

The 355 you are looking at has been correctly maintained by an expert, so without assuming anything this is going to be a good one. Was the 360 also taken care of by Brian?
Is there any differed maintenance on ether car?

360 is more of a daily driver IMO, it is easier to get in and out of (if you care about that sort of thing) it is more modern and more refined (I consider this a negative, but more on that later) 360's have known problems different to the 355 but some can easily be as costly.

355 is a special car, it feels special, looks special and is a rare sight when compared to a 360. I would happily daily drive my 355 but (and it is a personal thing) I do not want it to loose the "special treat" feeling, I brought the car as a toy, not as an appliance so I want to keep it for fun times only. 355's have known problems and most of these will be sorted and if not at least you are going in with your eyes open to the possibility that it may need to have some extra work done.

If ether break they can be fixed.

This is a fantastic decision to have to make! I made it (I looked at 360’s and 355’s when I purchased mine) and I choose the 355 as a toy, not as a daily. I choose the 355 as it was always a dream for me to own one, the 360 did not have that same “dream” attached to it. The Ferrari dream comes with both and that costs, not only to get in to but to stay in. If I was in your shoes and looking at the same decision I would realise that both models are going to cost you more than any “normal” car to own, this is offset by the experience of driving a Ferrari daily, weather one will cost more than the other is pure speculation and no one here knows the 360 is going to be cheaper to maintain than the 355 or vice versa, we are all guessing, and both have the potential to make your eyes water and your wallet vomit, but don’t forget, both might be as cheap to own as a Civic.

So, this all can come down to which one you prefer the look of, which one would YOU like to drive daily?

360-I have enough in receipts from maintenance on 2 355's to buy a 360........

Way off here, and I know it doesn't follow the agenda but I'd get a Maserati. It is a BADA$$ daily driver, just as fast as my 355 for the most part and it turns tons of heads.
VERY classy comfy machine. For what you're spending you could buy one still under warranty (4 yr 50K) so when your DD breaks you just dial 1-800-comegityourcrap and it simply doesn't get any cheaper than that....When off warranty no belts at all....Like a 430 (chains)
Since it has a Ferrari powerplant you still get the sound, flat crank or not, it still sounds fantastic with a pair of Tubis.

Sorry for the different thought but thats what I did. I was fed up with needing 2 Ferraris to have a good one.

One of the posters said it best, Ferraris are race cars first, comfort and reliability comes second......

Good luck, you have a great problem to have!!!!

    :) :)

Have driven and ridden in both, and I am in the same boat as you, have a choice between two at the moment. I drove both and had the owner drive me as well. I will tell you this, both made my HR go up about 70 beats per minute from resting HR. But when the owner of the 355 really got into it, it was the one that actually made me grab the door handle and say "mommy" underneath my breath. What a ride, granted this probably could have been gotten from the 360 as well but it happened in the 355, thus that is what I am looking for now.

and own the 355 now.. think about the 360 al the time. Its a bigger lighter car. The performance is about the same. The 360 is a better all around car. The 355 is a lot more fun.

Based on your responses and my other research so far, it sounds like the answers to my Reliability and Fun Factor questions are somewhat consistent:

Reliability: 360, unless I really do my homework and ALSO get lucky; even with valve guides and headers done, these may fail again after a few years, or I might still easily spend 10K in a year replacing something else. It seems as those the 355's driven consistently fewer problems.

Fun Factor on the street: 355, but this is a closer call. At least to me, "Fun" = visceral feel/road feedback and SOUND -- I understand that the 360 handles better and is faster in objective terms.

I humbly request some additional insight for those with lots of time in both: Handling wise, was anyone unsatisfied with the 355 for spirited street use? I am assuming that even if slightly less capable that the 360, the lack of electronic aides should make it all the more engaging to drive. With those of you with Porsches, as compared to the 993 or 996, am I right in assuming there is no comparison and the 355 takes the cake over both in terms of handling/feedback/nimbleness?

SO, I am no more than 1 week away from a purchase, and I am now leaning to the 1999 6 speed 355 coupe, with fingers crossed that I don't buy a sorted car, just to have to resort it and that I have at least a couple years before any really costly comes up.

Thanks again to all provided their insight and especially to the local guys who offered their first hand knowledge and support.

Hello Dan, good luck with whichever car you decide to get. I am also happy to see that you came back and responded to the feedback. It seems like there has been several people lately that have asked for advice and then never came back. I look forward to hearing more from you as you make your move into Ferrari ownership. ;)

You guys are off point " a little". I think he is asking which is a better daily driver. And I think no one disagrees the 360 is a better daily driver.

    Daily driver duty:

    Well sorted 355

    or

    Well sorted 360

My money goes to the 355.

I can try to reason why I would choose this, but it's simple. Drive both, you will see why.

You say there is a 35k difference between the two cars and yet you mention daily driver in the same sentence.

I think in many ways this answers your question.

I would take the f355 and go and buy myself a fiat 500 abarth or somethign similar as my daily driver and leave the ferrari for special occasions.

Either of these cars will suffer depreciation if you put lots of miles on looking at the service recommendations will be expensive to run adn in daily driver form have the ability to lose your license or in US from what i understand get you lots of fines.

At the end of the day though a ferrari should always be bought in my opinion on what stirs your soul. For me the f355 was the more exotic looking car whereas the look of the 360 although not ugly doesnt have the same effect for me.

Go and have a drive but i would seriously think about something else as a daily driver. And for those who say you buy these cars to drive not to look at I tottally agree but sitting in a traffic jam in a Ferrari is not my idea of driving just a frustrating waste of time.

Driven both, the 360 is a boring car. It's pretty, it's a Ferrari, but it's boring in my humble opinion. The 355 is the funnest car I've ever driven. Honestly I can't think of a car that has that kind of sound and power combination (not crazy power, but enough to have fun). And that sound is makes going through a tunnel still puts a smile on my face. The only vehicle that is more fun (or about the same) is my Harley Davidson. Now if you want a daily driver get the 360 I guess, but Ferrari isn't a daily driver even if you have the money. It's just stupid. My humble opinion. Just like any exotic it breaks down, but you just need to budget that like insurance or any other cost.

    Yep! Sometimes it does.....

I tell everyone that a GM vehicle is designed to make it to the 3 yr 36K warranty.

A Ferrari is simply designed to make it home from the dealership.....

There is nothing I love more than my Ferrari. It's unique, sounds great, exclusive, and sexy but an absolute total piece of **** when it comes to build quality and reliability.

You're right I fix machines everyday, maybe not a car but either way still full of grease, fuel, and oil.....I know a POS when I see one.

If a Ferrari were an airplane it would be an Airbus, really cool all the way to the point where the computer freaks out and it plows through the trees, or it breaks up over the ocean:)

I wouldn't part with it however :) Well then again it depends on the day you ask me....

I've never driven a 360, but I can tell you that after I got my F355 and drove it for a couple days, when I got back in my DD 996 it felt like a truck. The light boosted steering took a little getting used to, but once I did the F355 felt a lot more tossable and fun.

Although I was very turned off by the Black GTS (not to mention the hardsell owner who had done NOTHING to the car while extolling the virtues of how well well maintaned it and, even going so far as to the say the valve guides and headers had never been inspected and certainly not respected -- and he wouldn't let me have the car inspected expect in this garagged (with over 40K on the odo (yet another iie from the seller) this too many red flags. Personally, I think the car was a slower example, for some reason that I don't know enough about the car to speculate about. I assume that its like buying a 996 turbo, drive one and it may feel like it has 30 more hp than another even when both are bone stock.

It seems true - the TRULY sorted cars or at least start in the mid to high sixties.

So the search continues, and I am considering ONE 430, since it is priced under 120. Of course it needs a clutch and who knows what else....But, again thanks and if anyone knows anything about a cheap 430 being sold from a dealer in Central Cali, please let me know.

    dan
