This will be my only car as Im selling everything else I have for it. I have no space for other cars as Im moving into an apt.
so far I m leaning towards the R8 V8 because I can put alot of miles on it without feeling bad about depreciation or breaking down.
The dealer has given me a great deal on a R8 for $120k with all the the options I want, white on black with carbon....etc . Now my question is Should I be looking at a gallardo or a f430? ( no 360) Will I be able to find a deal on a 430 thats near 120k? Keep in mind that this will be my only car but I may not drive it everyday to work as I can take the subway occasionally. Im also concerned about the next generation 430 as it seems though it may be out by the end of 2010. 430 will again be dated just like the pre LP gallardo. If I were to get the 430 or a gallardo at that price range, i wont be getting my first color of choice - white, in addition to 4 year 60k warranty. Since I will be keeping the car for the next who knows when 10 years!!!!, literally!!, I want to drive it with confident. I dont want to feel scared of breaking down in the middle of the road going on vacation. If money is no objective, i would choose the 430. But at my price range, i can only probably get a 2005 430 and will the 430 last 10 more years for a 2005?
The most important decision is to choose a car that will last 10 years, putting down at least 10,000 miles per year. Will a 80,000 to 90,000 mile F430 ferrari still run? a 80,000 mile gallardo? I have also gotten new cars from BMW to Lexus and yes I did bring into the dealer for repairs here and there. In 10 years, I can probably easily sell a 80,000 mile R8 then a 80,000 mile 430 or gallardo right? Lastly, I want to get a car that doesnt attractive way too much attention. A little attention is fine, but I dont want to park it on the street in the city and have to worry about people keying the car. I want to feel comfortable going to the supermarket and buy grocery or going to the movie. How are the maintenance on these cars? Audi told me theres not much I have to worry about other than regular oil change. I have not been able to test drive the 430 nor the R8 as the dealers wont allow me to, so I have nothing to compare to. I can only rely on you guys' expertise on this. I really hope to get some honest opinions on this.

    thanks in advance

It seems that the R8 is clearly the car that will suit your needs.

Of those three the Audi suits you the best...but man, with your situation I wouldn't be going anywhere near a car like that. Selling everything to get a supercar, living in an apartment with a supercar, not wanting too much attention and getting a supercar, etc., all sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I suggest you read this thread, I found it helpful: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=119010

It has some good information about the $/mile maintenance costs you can expect to incur on a car such as those you listed. Especially if you are planning on using it daily, you should know these numbers very well and plan accordingly, because if you have to sell a lot just to afford the purchase of the car, get ready to hate it as it drains you over the course of ownership.

Do what you want with your own money...this is just my two cents. Good luck!

hey thanks for your honest advice. I guess I didnt make it clearly. I was living with a few friends in a house however I just got my own place and its an apartment in the city. They only give me 1 parking space, so I decided to sell my other 2 cars. I put 20,000 miles on the cars I had for the past year, i guess 10,000 on the next car might be over estimating as I could take the subway if needed. The main goal here is to have a car that will last a long time, 8 years at least. If I do get a job outside the city in the future, I may have to commute with the R8, or the 430.

but again thanks for the link, it looks like its a 348. Is 430 going to be much more expensive?

The Audi R8 is *easily* the most practical exotic. Audi dealerships are everywhere. Parts are common. Nice warranty, too.

The Ferrari 430 is better looking if you want the Spider.

The Lambo is better looking if you want a coupe.

Why the 10 year time limit? Have you ever lived in your own place for 10 straight years? Most people average moving in less than 7. Few people keep cars as long as they stay in their houses, so even less than 7 years for average length of car ownership.

Plenty of Ferraris with much higher miles than that on 'em :):)

I think you meant to say "in 10yrs I'll be lucky if I can give away an 80,000 mile R8" :) - go and check out the market for 10yr old audi/BMW/Merc and compare to 10yr old Ferraris ;)

In my opinion, which is clearly very subjective, the R8 is the answer to a question nobody asked. If you really want the best of what that company can offer, get a 911 Turbo. It will blow the R8 away and is a real sports car, not an aggregation of parts to make a mediocre GT.

If you want a sports cars get a Ferrari. If you want a Japanese anime cartoon get a Lambo, but frankly you're much better off getting an idea. Invest your money in something tangible that will rise in value over the next ten years. Great companies with cash on their balance sheets are being sold on the NYSE for pennies against their real value. Real estate is being given away and Muni bonds over ten years will grow not depreciate. Exotic cars should only ever be bought with f#$k you money, that you can afford to wave goodbye to for ever.

I just thought about how if this had been two years ago, I can guarantee you someone would have said "put that money into a house... something that will definitely go up in value."

Oh how the times have changed.

Gallardo is not a bad choice either... Its an Audi underneath and anyone who works on Audis can work on it. No reason it will not go 100k without much maintenance ...

    so its now about looks...

I would go for the R8 out of you three choices, but if I was in your position I would go for either a Porsche 911 Turbo, a Porsche Carrera S or a Porsche Carrera 4S.

I think it's safe to say that if you bought a house two years ago, 8 years from now that house will be worth significantly more than you paid.
Values tend to rise over ten year cycles for tangible assets like real estate regardless of the short term swings within the ten year period.

I still say by a house now, this is the best time to do it. Also, owning a house/apt should come before owning an exotic regardless of how much money you have saved, just IMHO.

Personally, I wouldn't be spending 100k+ on a car if I had to sell everything and live in an apartment to afford it.

Defiantly would get the 997 Turbo:

-Faster then the R8, Gallardo and up to par with the 430
    -reliable
    -4 seats
    -4WD
-not a real attention grabber, but still very good looking
-surprisingly good on gas (18-25), and because of the turbos, good emissions
-most amount of cargo out of the four
-You see many 911s that have been driven up to 100,000 miles
-One of the most comfortable out of the four
-IMO, a lot classier then the Gallardo
-Along with the Audi, lowest serivce costs, but it will blow the Audi away in any race.

You don't want to drive a 430 or a Gallardo everyday in the city, they're way to attention grabbers, and the Turbo is just plain better then the R8.

Get the 911 Turbo, trust me!

I agree. The 911 turbo or the r8 seems like the best choice for your situation.

911 Turbo is a real bad ass and the Audi R8 turns me on when a cougar is at the wheel.

Hi Steve, I drove the 911 Turbo, its a little bit faster than the gallardo. However, 8 years down the road, I think i may get tired of looking at a VW. Never liked the shape of the 911.

I just look on autotrader and there are plenty TT that are in the mid to high 80s now, but i just dont know if I will be happy looking at it for the next 7-8 years.

Rather than keep switching cars to cars. For example, buying a M3, then sell it in 1 year and buy a IS-F and sell it and buy a Boxster., then buy a 911 then sell it and buy a SUV... I might just well just go straight to the car I want and keep it for 7 to 8 years ..or whenever its about to die. No one answered the question of 430s longevity. Will it last 7 MORE years on a 2005 with 80k miles considering I do regular maintenance and do not abuse it.

It sounds like everyone recommends that 911 Turbo because of its practicality. but I dont see it as much faster. Thats not to say the R8 is a better car than the 911 because I have never driven the R8 (dealer wont allow test drives), but from reading reviews on the R8 and people from the R8talk forum and from people who have switched from the 911 TT, the R8 is alot more fun to drive even though its alot slower.

I want a 430 but cant find any at 120k. What do I do, should I wait?

I thought about investing in stock or real estate. But I dont think its the right time to do it yet.

If i were you, I would go for the R8. It seems as you're gonna get a good deal on it, it'll be easier to service, and it is a very practical car. If you're worried about attention, then you should buy a Porsche, because they're everywhere. But the R8 is an amazing car; thee is a doctor who works near my house and his DAILY driver is a red Audi R8 with Carbon blades. He also owns a Porsche GT3, but rarely drives that. I've attached some photos of his car, just so you can see it. Of course, the F430 and Gallardo are pretty insane, but the R8 is better bang for the buck IMO.

I have both a 997TT and a 430 and I am not sure why you say the TT is a little faster than the gallardo. Unless you are talking about the LP560 the 997TT will eat any gallardo for breakfast and will eat the 430 for lunch. The torque of the TT cannot be found anywhere else and I agree that it is the best car to be daily driven. Mine has 32k miles already and I don't know yet if the 430 is as reliable but one thing for sure I would never want to make my 430 a daily driver, just doesnt work, too low, bad rear view, difficult to park and back up etc..
I would go for a clean 2007 997TT since they have already depreciated.
    Good luck.
