Am I correct in thinking that street (non-performance) tires with plenty of tread depth can lose their grip through age / hardening? I've always believed, without knowing if this is really correct, that tires become "work hardened" through many many cycles of heating and cooling. Is this correct?
I feel stupid asking this as I'm pretty sure I know the answer, just looking for confirmation.

Old tires that become hard etc DO lose their grip and bite. Why many replace tires with good tread just due to age.

isnt the rule of thumb to replace every 7-8yrs regardless of mileage?
