And I thought I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Moving on, after calculating what valve shims I need to order, I decide to check out the brake pads. Fronts are worn right to the point where the sensor is just touching the rotor. Caught that in time. I spun the front right wheel and it sounded like metal on metal. Took it apart and behold. Inner bearings are burned black. One more reason to park it in the "barn". It just doesn't get any better than this! The seller must still be laughing.

Ouch! That's an expensive hub bearing. Do a search on USA corvette hub as there is a company
That can put a non Ferrari exact hub match onto your front half axle, instead.

I'd do the search for you except that I'm on my Blackberry out on a sandbar in the Gulf at the moment.

    Oooooohhhh!!!

I feel your pain bro, as I just replaced my left front wheel bearing a few months ago. So don't feel so bad, because you aren't the only one that bought a piss poorly maintained 348 for more than you should have. Trust me I KNOW!! ;)

    Having said that,

OUTSTANDING thread, and it's great to have another guy in the 348 Brotherhood that turns his own wrenches. Keep up the good work.

    Ernie,

This is getting expensive, but at least I'm having fun. I keep telling myself this anyway. I didn't think the initiation fee would be quite so high to join the Brotherhood.

Okay so before it gets even more expensive I HIGHLY suggest you check the ring nuts for the main-shaft/lay-shaft in your gear, and also inspect the bearings. The ring nut that has bee particularly problem some is the one located on the gearbox oil pump side of the tranny. Run a search of the archives for guys that have had to rebuild their gearboxes (me being one of them). Trust me bro you don't even want to know how expensive that can get.

While you have the engine out of the car remove the clutch and replace the triple seals. It can save you from the headaches of having to repack the flywheel, or even worse having to pony up the money to buy a new one. Again something I know first hand how expensive it is.

In a nut shell while you have the everything out, go over it with a fine tooth comb.

Did you read through the link to the 348 primer? If not PLEASE do yourself a favor and read the WHOLE thing. And, the search button is your friend. You will be amazed at the amount of things we have covered already. So run a search of the archives if you run into something you have a question about, then post the question if you can't find the answer.

Mack, have you checked to see if your 348 is actually a USA model? I wonder if maybe it was originally sold in Saudi Arabia, or somewhere like that.

Check the plate in the left front door jamb and see if it states that it meets USA Federal Standards. There should also be a plate on the engine lid that says the car meets the EPA standards.

Is the 8th digit in your VIN number an "A"?

Also, I got replacement brake pads that made almost no dust and had great street driving characteristics from www.buybrakes.com . I got the Axxis Deluxe plus pads for about $45 per axle or so.

Tire size is correct and matches what is on the sticker located on the passenger's door frame. But like PAP 348 stated, "Replace those cheese cutter rear tyres with the correct 255's". I've got to agree they are ugly. However, I can't see them from the cockpit and maybe they will stick like fly paper. I'll have you know that I also have matching cheese cutters on the front too! I hope I mounted them in the correct direction. I'd hate to drive in reverse everytime I take it for a drive. I could probably get away with driving it on the street in the forward direction, but on the track I would certainly have to run her in reverse. Anyone have the low down on a real tall reverse gear?

    Most certainly is. :D:D

Sh*t man, they must have made a mistake when they printed your tyre placard.:rolleyes:

My tyre placard reckons I should have 255's fitted on the back.:eek:

Oops! Typo. Rear rims are mounted with 255/45 ZR17. My mistake. It will NEVER happen again. ;)
