    OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Formerly owned by Robert E. Petersen, famed automotive published and founder of the Petersen Automotive Museum

    Design by Pininfarina

315 bhp, 4,823 cc V12 engine with dual overhead camshafts and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, five-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension with unequal-length A-arms, coil springs and ant-roll bars, and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 106.3”

At the 1976 Paris Auto Salon, Ferrari introduced the new 400 2+2, its replacement for the 365 GT4 2+2. Featuring distinctively angular styling by Pininfarina, the 400 continued to provide luxurious and spacious high-speed transportation for up to four passengers, powered by a front-mounted 4,823 cc V12 engine with dual overhead camshafts. Precise handling was provided by a fully independent suspension, while both a five-speed manual gearbox and a proven GM Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission were available, encouraging broad appeal for the new model.

In keeping with tradition, the 400 was carefully improved with the addition of Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection in 1979, providing reduced exhaust emissions, as well as easier maintenance. Equipped with a numerically low final-drive ratio, the 400i was a very strong performer capable of comfortable and extended high-speed cruising in the best Ferrari GT tradition, with a top speed of 150 mph. Produced in 400 and 412 variants from 1976 until 1989, just 2,383 examples of this limited-production series were built. With its handsome Pininfarina bodywork and high performance levels, the 400 has recently attracted the attention of astute Ferrari collectors and enthusiasts and they are widely regarded as very capable grand touring machines.

Finished in its lovely original color, Marrone Colorado, this 1981 Ferrari 400i is equipped with the very desirable five-speed manual gearbox and its fuel-injected V12 engine offers a robust 315 horsepower. While its early years were spent in Germany, the Ferrari was imported to the United States in 1983, where it has remained ever since, with the majority of its time spent in California. Formerly owned by magazine publisher and founder of the Petersen Automotive Museum Robert E. Petersen, this particular example benefited from proper maintenance and knowledgeable ownership. Today, it retains the Kenwood radio unit that was installed in 1983 and mechanically, it has received newer fuel delivery and exhaust systems. Other recent work includes a re-covered dash, a new clutch, new timing chains and crankshaft seals, along with a number of other upgrades.

Complemented by a set of correct five-spoke magnesium wheels and Michelin TRX tires, this elegant, yet very sporty 1981 Ferrari 400i 2+2 is certain to offer the thrilling driving experience that only a Ferrari can deliver.

Guess I should be more clear...looks like there will be a successful bidder since it's without reserve, guess the question then becomes how much...

    I'll bite. I'm guessing mid-20's, like 27.5.

With the presale estimate of GBP 24,4211 ($40,050) to GBP 30,527 ($50,064) I guess RM Auctions is counting on "Monterey Fever" to kick in!

OTOH, this is s/n 35057 and it last sold in 2007 at the Gooding Pebble Beach auction for $52,800. Reported to have been repainted in 1994, when it got its new fuel system and exhaust, and donated to the Petersen Museum in 2000, where it stayed until the auction in 2007.

    Well worth watching this one!

From the RM description in the OP posting:

"Finished in its lovely original color, Marrone Colorado, this 1981 Ferrari 400i is equipped with the very desirable five-speed manual gearbox and its fuel-injected V12 engine offers a robust 315 horsepower. While its early years were spent in Germany, the Ferrari was imported to the United States in 1983, where it has remained ever since, with the majority of its time spent in California. Other recent work includes a re-covered dash, a new clutch, new timing chains and crankshaft seals, along with a number of other upgrades. "

They are masters at telling a story that has no apparent mistruths but the wording certainly can lead the reader to think that it was in Petersen's private hands for a lot longer than it was (ca. 7 years in the museum out of 26 years in the U.S.).

I should point out a correction to my earlier post on the 1981 400i 5 speed sold at RM that the correct serial number is 35097. I have it that way in my database so I have no explanation for the mis-typing in the earlier post!

Does anyone have a mileage on the car?
