Rumor is that he is retiring tomorrow, but until I hear that from my boss and have his laptop in my hands I won't believe it.

In a professional setting, once one party threatens another employee to "pound him into the ground" At that point guess who gets fired or resigns? That kind of reasoning usually ends up in hand cuffs.
If you really want to correct the issue, try to make him your best friend then you can easly make him fall down an elevator shaft.
By blowing your cool and acting like an idiot will only blow up into your own face. Just maintain your own lane and let him cut his own throat. Always remain to be a professional, not a work place thug.

After having learned a few things in the past 24 hours, it appears he has been seriously considering retirement for some time. He told higher-ups that our confrontation was not the reason he was retiring, not that would want that dubious distinction. My take on his blowup was that he had already decided to leave, but if this power grab had been successful he would have stayed.

His last day was apparently Wednesday, as he called several people (but notably not our boss) and announced yesterday that he was done. He is supposedly bringing all his work materials from home and turning it in this morning. He refuses to put any of his work on the network server, so I am really hoping his house doesn't have a "lightning strike" before he turns in his laptop. At least it is sunny today.

They might of offered him a golden parachute to expediate his leaving. Anyway the issue is resolved without the "Going out to the parking lot mentality" :D, Now life is good! Enjoy the well deserved weekend.

You stood up to him, he couldn't take it, and he took the easy way out.

    You won. Big time.

A word of warning. Termination (regardless of how) for any IT employee requires an immediate network account lock-out and password change. That includes all routers, servers, remote login, admin accounts, etc. You might want to keep an eye on the firewall and network intrusion logs for suspicious activity as well.

Remember, about 90% of all hacking occurs from within.

I found out today that they had been secretly backing up his hard drive for some time when he was connected to the network. Some of his comments had raised suspicions with the IT manager. So no real worries about lost data.

We actually don't work in IT, another poster gave their example. But you raise a good point that a disgruntled employye could wreak havoc if they had IT skills and access. We actually had a problem like that a year ago when an employee was given time to collect his things and deleted a bunch of things off the network, some of which unfortunately hadn't been backed up. They started being more vigilant after that.

Really, you don't need to do anything except get other people to help push his buttons so everyone else can see how crazy and stupid he is. Pounding does not work, so don't waste your time--if you win, you lose.

You can: Encourage others not to tolerate his belligerant behavior, ask the boss why he tolerates such a maniac, and mention that he's a disruption to the company's objectives and goals with his self-promoting, total bs persona.

Treat him nicely, be courteous, and always be professional. He will reveal himself to all in no time.

I had one of these guys at my last company and he had a short man's complex to boot. He was retarded and never had anything constructive to say about anything; just a bunch of jibberish that no one understood anyway. He's still there, stupid as a stone and running out of business fast. They are trying to phase him out of his job by starving him. I don't think it'll work because he can't finish a sentence withou lying about something. So, as you can imagine, he can't interview worth a crap to find something else. He begged his way into the job as it is, and my boss caved, and regretted it every day.

I used to give his name to recruiters all the time, but he so stupid they probably hung up on his dumb ass--worth a try though.

In this day and age of lawsuits, they don't want to fire him, but push him out instead.

Keep your head up, be a man of few but very dangerous words that cripple when they are used at the most opportune time. You're not the only one who notices what's going on, so speaking up like you did will give you some credability and provide momentum for others to speak up. You are not alone, but as you know it feels like you are when the sht hits the fan.

Life is too short to put up with BS. Pick your battles very carefully; knowing in advance the outcome before the battle ensues, or do not engage at all. Instead, wait for another day, it will come. He can't help himself, trust me.

Do your job, and do it well--there's no substitute for a super productive worker.

    Good luck.

I worked MANY years at a company with folks like that. I quit, started my own business, made a
zillion dollars more than I would have made there, paid off my home, bought a vacation home, bought
a new Mercedes (ok - 2 of them now), and a Ferrari - and now I call on them as a rep in that
very business and whadyaknow - they're now one of my good customers, and I have the smug
position of knowing that EVERY ONE OF THEM is secretly jealous of where I've gone in the last 8
years, while they've just languished in the samo-samo. Revenge works in strange ways....

    Just food for thought.......

Correct. It is absolutely impossible to fight an illogical person with logic. It cannot be done. Period. Get creative.
