Mine pulled out as I pulled off the pumpkin or slave. I had to twist/rotate it slightly to get it to press back in, though. Trivial.

Shaft dont come out if you just want to do triple seals. Leave the shaft in there. :):)

Shaft can be removed though if you remove the TO bearing flange. :):)

That expalins it.. I've had conflicting reports on the hot water trick vs the cardboard method vs just putting some oil on the seals and sliding them on. Being married for 15 years I probably couldn't put a condom on either. suggestions on what method to try first? and how to hold the shaft out while trying to get them on

Well, everyone does it differently of course. I would just put some light oil or vasoline on them to slide them on. :):)

Hold the shaft with your hands if possible. Its tricky, but can be done. A little muscle helps here to get the seals on while holding the shaft. :):)

Alternatively, slide the seal on as best you can then wrap some rag over the end of the shaft and have someone hold it out with multi-grips while you slide the seal all the way on. :):)

    My goodness! :eek::eek:

Just for the record after driving a fair bit, the one man Motive power bleed is *the* way to do the new slave cyl + clutch fluid bleed. Perfect pedal from the very first time.

I didn't pull the shaft all the way out, just far enough to remove and replace the triple seals.

I tried the hot water trick, I plopped two seals in boiling water for 5 minutes and kept one seal out to compare. After 5 minutes in boiling water, there was no detectible difference in the size of the seals...nothing. No change in diameter, no change in thickness, nada. I would say that the boiling is a waste of time.

Take your time, slide them carefully into place. Mine stretched a bit getting over the wider part of the shaft, and as a result didn't seem to seat well in the recess where they sit. I carefully used a screwdriver to press around the circumference of each seal to get past the lip. Once free of the lip, the shaft slid in very nicely.

I dropped off the fywheel with Ron today.. his info re the seals was the same. He did mention that if they are left for a day or overnight they shink up and fit more snug.. may also make it easier to slide the shaft back in....

I'm just pleased everyone was able to compare notes while doing this stuff he same time.. I think it's the brotherhood at it's finest.

    Update

Got the newly repacked flywheel from Ron (racer on here). The clutch must have been done during the last major as he told me it showed almost no wear. Hope to have it all back together in the next week or so.

If anyone in the Atlanta area needs work done I would't hesitate to recommend Ron Reineke. Great work, great prices and very easy to work with.

    just another update....

went to put in the new triple seals. Noticed a lttle clutch fuid had wept out between the slave cyl and T/O bearing. After talking with Ernie he suggested I grow a pair and replace the seals in the T/O myself. I wasn't sure it was something I was up for and was concerned since all I hear about is people replacing the whole assembly not putting in new seals. I pulled it apart with Ernie's blessing and other than the bath of fluid everything comes apart very easy. The seals were VERY easy to replace. Just pull out the old and in with the new. They are soft rubber so it was a snap to put them in. My leak was the seal clusest to the front of the car as i could feel fluid on between the slave and the T/O. I popped the bearing back on and secured the metal tab that keeps it from sliding off the slave. Tomorrow I'm going to give the triple seals another shot. Everyone keep your fingers crossed...

As for putting on the new triple seals.

How about wrapping a clear sheet of plastic around the shaft, and then slide the seals over the plastic into the grooves. If you need something to help get them over the end of the shaft, go to Wal-Mart and buy a plastic funnel for a couple of bucks. Then cut the tip of the funnel off, to size, and use that to get the seal over the shaft.

I tried that...just couldn't maneuver the plastic sheet and force the seals over at the same time. Ended up just one seal at a time, forcing them on. They seemed too big once on, but so far so good! (2 yrs, maybe 5k F1 miles?)

Well when I did mine I caveman'd it. I just used my fingers to get them on. Hooked my fingers inside and pulled the "ring" apart just a little bit. Then I pried them over the end of the shaft with my fingers. Yes it was a pain in the butt getting them on, but they did go on. Tough little buggers.

Hot water, HA! We don't need no stinking hot water.

I measured my triple seals before and after soaking in hot water, and hot water doesn't do anything! I didn't have plastic, so I used thin cardboard like on a Fedex mailer. Once on, I scrunched them down some with a hose clamp. So far no leaks.

I found by far the BEST WAY to get triple seals on. I shot some quick video from my cell phone. I'll post it as soon as I figure out how to post a video clip here. The video is VERY poor quality since it was shot with a 5 year old cell phone in a dark garage but it gets the point across. With this method it can be done in about 3 minutes for all 3 seals. I may also make a new thread on it so it's easier to find when searching in the future.

Just rename the video file tripring.avi instead of tripring.3gp and you'll be able to upload it (everyone else will be able to play it).
