Scariest Movie?

I was 17 when I saw The Exorcist at the Fort Polk, LA, Post Theater...

I was literally shaking when I came out of the theater....

28 Days Later - plays on fear of being alone, not being able to trust anybody

The Gate - Had the arms w/claws reaching out from under the bed, I still jump onto my bed when alone

Jaws - still have a hard time swimming by myself

The Ring - not as scary the second time around, but I remember for 4-6 weeks after seeing it TV static made me nervous

It - couldn't open a fridge without expecting a head, or turning on a sink without expecting blood

Blob scared me as a kid, I had a few Alien nightmares (but still love the first two Alien movies).

Surprisingly, I saw the Exorcist and it didn't really freak me out.

 

Can't believe I'm the first to mention John Carpenter's original "Halloween" from '78 - a horror masterpiece - shot on a shoestring budget and introduced us to a fresh new actress in Jamie Lee Curtis - the score alone still gives me the chills!!

Watching it right now !

 

The petri dish scene made me jump straight up, totally unexpected scene.

 

The only movie that scared the shizzle out of me was The Omen. I was 6 when it was on cable, dad said that I wasn't old enough to watch it, and he was right. Had my first nightmare that night and I still remember everything about the dream.

 

The music at the end still haunts me, as they fade to black. That music set such a spooky. Not the typical Hollywood ending.

Most of these Films also seem to be age related. I was 10 when I saw Jaws in the theater on the big screen. Wouldn't be the same if I saw it on DVD as an adult the first time.

 

This thing scared the crap out of me as a kid in the 70's!:

But also have to give props to the Ring, Shinging, Exorcist and the Omen.

Another good one was John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness; the FTL trnamissions of the 'whatever it was' walking out of the church door creeped me OUT!

I am very pleased to see someone mention the vastly underrated Prince of Darkness...whata fantastic *thinkers* horror movie.

The Ring, I slept with the lights on that night and didn't want to go near a TV. The most disturbing part was the horse on the boat.

IMO the Saw movies are awesome, personally the 3rd one is my favorite.

I don't think I've sat through the exorcist or jaws in their entirety, but from the parts I have seen they haven't bothered me.

 

Ooooh, I see. Everyone's different, but most people I know thought the Saw movies were over the top. Then again, my sweet, grade school teaching sister-in-law didn't think any of them were that bad. Haha!!

Michael Myers in Halloween scared me when I was a kid...forgot about that one!

 

Never really get scared with any of the real over the top stuff (Halloween, anything sci fi, etc) but that last movie that serious had me looking around corners in the all dark house at night was The Strangers. Just soooo messed up and based on actual events, was the scariest movie I've ever seen by far.

 

The original Halloween, when I was about 13. It's kind of hard for a movie to scare you after a certain age, I believe. They can freak you out a little, or disturb you. But you kind of go in knowing what to expect to a certain degree.

 

If any of you have seen the Nine Inch Nails "Broken" movie that Trent Reznor and Peter Christopherson made but never officially released........that is the one and only time I actually had to turn something off because I felt sick. The gore in that wasn't over the top, blood everywhere fake looking, it was very restrained sometimes and is about what I imagine it would look like if you really cut on someone. After the initial shock, I've watched it and it's been no big deal, but man.....that first time was bad.

 

I don't remember how I happened to see the original "King Kong" in the late Fifties, when I would have been 7 or 8, but it must have been on TV. For a long time I was seriously afraid there were giant gorillas running around town.

 

I think Jaws was my first, my mother took me to see the release back in the mid 70's. Freaked me out for a bit, I was afraid to talk a bath after seeing that.

Another film would be Trilogy of Terror with the Zuni Doll. The way it moved in those attack sequences scared me as a child & still kinda effects me to this day. Funny thing is when I was 11 my mom took me to Universal Studios for the campy tour. Somewhere they had a prop museum complete with a Zuni. I still remember getting a cold chill down back staring at that thing. Now that's great film making!

I bought the Trilogy on DVD a few years back and showed it to my kids 14 yo to 9, evil Dad that I am! They hate that doll just like me now!

 

The Sixth Sense really disturbed me for a while. I don't really get 'scared' by most movies. The premise was really cool in that film, especially when the cyclist is standing by the car and all those dead people were walking around his house.

Anything where essentially dead people are back up and walking around scares me. When I was a kid, I saw Salem's Lot on TV and had to sleep with the light on for MONTHS.

The Gift was also another strange movie that bothered me a little bit. The dead girl in the trees was creepy.

I know a lot of people think Silence of the Lambs was pretty scary...great movie!

I'm going to way back, "Attack of the Crab Monsters". A 50's B movie that gave me nightmares for years. I saw it when I was 9 or 10. Radiation mutated giant crabs snip the heads off their victims and eat them and then can think and talk. Today it's simply funny, but back then, scary! It was on a double feature with the second movie was a guy with no pupils in his eyes, just whites, goes around draining the blood from his victims with some kind of machine. I don't even remember the name of the film. Both of these were black and white films. It seems the scariest films, for me, were always in B+W.

Me too! That vampire in Salem's Lot still freaks me out. Also, just seeing pictures of Max Schreck in Nosferatu is pretty creepy as well; I don't think they even put him in makeup!
