California Dreamin' in Beverly Hills. I am not aware of a single 288 GTO in the USA that is not driven on the road, at least occasionally, and most of them regularly. No wait. I just thought of one! And another! Oh well... Image by Arnoldy Image Unavailable, Please Login
Amazing amount of information received today from Ing Nicola Materazzi 'Father of the GTO' for the book, for which I am very grateful of course. Image Unavailable, Please Login

There is a quite nice 1/43 kit of the 288 GTO on ebay right now. A MR Collection/Bosica full detail kit. I have this kit and it's awesome. Seems even the collectors items are ever escalating as in time like the real car. Never as cheap as it was new.
lets get a pool going. like price is right. closest guesstimate wins. but i would say that if sackey is game, then he should post a fair evaluation of the car so we can all have the same data. he's gonna travel to scope out the honey. but based on his "ppi" it would be fun to see if we can peg the tail on the donkey. me? im confident in saying it will go fro 5oo to 750. im goig out on a limb!!<G>
500 sounds like a good starting point and expectations that it will exceed that are understandable, but 750 would be a bit of a surprise. There, Ive said something. Without really saying anything! I really want to see it first, then I will pin the tail on the donkey...

Fantastic thread! I need to take many hours of reading to catch up! Any info on the white '40? I saw one on the road here (Hong Kong) about 2 years ago and was under the impression it was the only white one in existance (ex-sultan of Brunei car). Would the one pictured be the same one?

Only 25 or so in the US?!?! Ok, say 40 in the UK, 25 in Germany, 40 in Italy, where are the rest? I would have thought there are at least 100 in the US. Please excuse if this issue has been beaten over before. When the 288 becomes import legal without alterations, will there be a flood of 288s coming in the US? Do Americans just not like the 288?
Yes Id say 26, 27 cars in the USA. Possibly 1 or 2 more. The cars are dotted all across the globe. Did you know there are (by my estimation) about half-a-dozen in Africa? Most European countries have GTOs in healthy numbers. Many Asian countries especially Japan have a GTO population. Canada, South America, etc. I think the lack of cars in the US simply has to do with the fact that the works never made a 'USA version' and a lot of people associate importation & legalization of cars with being a huge headache (it is!). From what I can see, and the prices that nice examples bring, Americans love the GTO, with its sublime styling which tends to age very well. However, for there to be a flood of cars coming into the USA when restrictions are no more, you have to have a large pool of cars available elsewhere, and that just will never happen with these. Remember, it is singularly the rarest of all of the Ferrari Supercars, almost twice as rare as an Enzo or F50, and almost 5 times as rare as an F40.
Here's another picture of Wisconsin-based #55223 while at Road America last weekend. Sounds fantastic with that exhaust. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Fantastic car, ZFFPA16B000055223, engine # 137, gearbox # 129, AC, PW, VM8500, originally Harmut Ibing (Germany) registered BO-YE.581, featured in the book Les Ferrari GTO, later registered D-SX.288, now R.S (USA).
Wow, that's incredible. What a great investment a GTO would make in the US. I'm 25 years old, I'm starting a business and my goal is to own one in 5 years, and mark my words when I do I will show everyone on this forum. The 288 GTO is by far my favorite sports car of all time. Elegance and timeless design. Thanks for the information Joe.
