They have been trying to create some standardization for Ferrari concour judging. Ed Gilbertson is a local and a friend and is sort of the father of it has been asked and consults to apply the same system to other marques and clubs. It is catching on in Europe too. They have been trying to reduce the subjectiveness of it but old habits die hard in some circumstances. It is changing and for the better because of the efforts of the people in IAC/PFA. It took me a while to fully understand all they are doing but I am very supportive of it. For one thing the need to have a hanger queen to be able to compete is being diminished. Use and preservation is being stressed over restoration. All good things. Deductions for over restoration are being encouraged. We had (and still do to some extent) people who would deduct 2 points for an incorrect screwdriver in the tool kit when missing the entire kit and jack bag was only 4 points. In that case as an example a reasonable facsimile of the OE screwdriver is OK. As for replacement parts if the shifterball is an exact replacement...no problem. If an exact replacement is not available from reasonable sources (meaning more than just the dealer parts counter. In other words it is well known you just cannot get that part.) a part officially superceded to another by Ferrari is OK but you should be armed with proof. Consumables like tires, batteries, wiperblades are allowed from any source as long as they are the correct size and type. Any license frame that does not detract is OK, non detracting improvements to the cooling system on the vintage cars is OK. That is in keeping with the philosophy of encouraging use. Later cars that did not come with radios are allowed any radio that does not detract. As you can see there are still many judgement calls so there will still be differences of opinion. It is without question not a science. The IAC/PFA meets every year at Cavalino. They try to constantly expand accepted knowledge about what is correct and not and decide what exceptions to original should be allowed. There is a fair amount of info on the web. Look it up, it should answer some questions for you.
Excellent info! I had a customer this morning request the older-style emergency lamp in the vinyl bag (and ciggy-type adapter) for his early F355. He said he lost some points for not having it at a recent concours. Well, since that thing is completely discontinued (although they show up on eBay), the only superseded option I could offer was the MagLight. Problem is, the maglight (albeit original and correct for 550, 430, etc) is designed to fit into the leather hoops of the owners pouch on those later cars. On an early car, there's really no storage provision. I suggested (since we don't have used parts here) the customer scour eBay rather than spend money on a MagLight which probably wouldn't move him any further ahead in points for an early F355. Sound advice? Another question... I love the services of stickynomore (and had Robbie do my 348 with AMAZING results). But I know it's not concours correct. It does however, allow the car to be more drivable and enjoyable -- and keeps rubber goo from getting onto my leather seats. What would judges think about that kind of refinishing? The color is correct, the pieces are original, but the rubberized texture has been removed. Thanks in advance; I do appreciate your insight!
I have offered on several occasions, and been asked on others to do exactly that. I've gone over several Dinos with owners, grabbed a judge who knew lots more than me for some help on a BBi, and did the once over on a Mondial this spring. all post concours. I have done a lap prior to judging and advised guys to remove license plate frames where they don't belong, floor mats, stickers etc. some guys will, some guys won't, but it's their choice at that point. Obviously, you can't mount the right sized tires when on the field, or a correct set of wheels, but there are plenty of minor deductions that can be handled prior to judging. Little thinks add up, like Brian says, and sometimes get bundled into a point or two of deductions, without really listing the individual issues that caused them, at least at the regional level. I've never judged at a national and never will so I can't speak to that. We don't share score sheets with the owners afterward. I don't know if that's a quirk of our chief judge, or in the rules somewhere. Phil is certainly a well known judge on the national level, so I follow his lead. DM
OE work lights are out there. They are not unobtanium. He needs to get one. I think well refinished plastic interior pieces are fine if they are well done. I am not going to examine it with a magnifying glass. I do know the unrefinished, damaged, gooey, plastic is going to cost points. That will be a bit of a judgement call until it is officially addressed. Robbie could petition IAC/PFA to issue something formal. They might address it. I know they are going to be asked to address 355 exhaust manifolds.
That's SO depressing to hear. The 308 is one of the BEST Ferrari's ever designed in my eyes. I would still love to fit one in the garage next to the 430 & 575 provided I can create the room! The complete MORONS that choose to discredit your absolute baseline of Ferrari likes, should continue working their way up to having the opportunity to clean one. *******s.
This is interesting. I'm not speaking for Robbie --- but who should owners (or stickynomore) contact about such a petition or formal request? Ed? I know that these days we sell almost zero replacement plastic. When Mike or I get a request for that stuff, we ask the customer if they are interested in concours competition. If they answer "no", then we simply refer them to Robbie. It'd be nice to also know that refinished pieces don't necessarily cost concours points.
Brian,no work today,so I washed the 308 dirty from ci and thought about what you told me about those badges that a hair dyer might get them off.I started on one being paitent and it fell to the floor, after about five minutes and I buffed the fender and it looked great you can't tell the badge was there. So I went to the other side and it fell to the floor also. white 2 sided tape, thank god it wasn't resin or glue like I was affraid, anyway does that get one point or two back for Danville? Thank you for mentioning a way to get them off much better looking car now
I really enjoyed the FCA event in New Orleans, it was just the right mix of driving, show and social mixing.... The judge there went out of his way to explain things as far as scoring, gave me a chance to fix them and said next time to wash it and hide the boots and whiskey.... It was a great time.
