Yep, Joe Smith drove the Fenner Tubbs Plymouth for a number of years. I watched him transition from S/SA to A/FX to altered wheelbase carbed, to altered wheelbase fuel injected. He was always a gentleman to race with and his car and rig were kept immaculate.

And his reward for persistance was a world championship...........well deserved.

He is still in Dallas, Texas building performance cars and engines........

    Thanks Very cool story!

How about another car> 'The Blue Max' and it's driver Richard Tharp...must be some good stories there. Didn't Richard marry the trophy girl?? Long before there were trophy wives, if you know what I mean.

Oh yea..........I will pull up some of the pictures. Last I heard Richard is a used car wholesaler in the Dallas area. He was quite a hoot. Never knew what to expect, out of him or his driving. I will try to find the photos of the crash of the later Blue Max with Raymond Beadle at the wheel....

Several of the original Blue Max with Richard Tharp up. About 1972 I think...

The crash of the Blue Max when Raymond Beadle was driving it.

Richard and Donnie Couch at Cacklefest

    Richard and Jungle Jim Liberman

Richard in the far lane losing to Dennis Baca in the near lane in 1977 top fuel

BlackJag is the GTO painted black or dark blue? Does it have the wood (plastic) 4 spoke steering wheel? That was a neat item on those cars. A GTO in it's element-the dragstrip!

Appropriate picture. Here in the states, the last Pontiac GTO built was a Holden Manaro in drag. Your dad had one of the best every built. Strange to see the steering wheel on that side, though.

Sounds awesome! Well, a GTO is built for 1/4 mile drags, but an XK-E wasn't. I know, I had one. Miss it! 30,000 in 18 months??? THAT'S a car guy!

Switch hitter? He was married to Ercie, right? :)

Ok - I have one. This is one of my favorite cars - ever! Since someone mentioned the E-Type (and since BlackJag and I own "E"s) - here's a fairly easy one:

Who drove this car? What was this person known for? For an added bonus, what was the name / body style of the car he drove before this one?

Driver was Shel Konblett. What was this person known for> He got out of Compton Calif alive?
The earlier car was another comic theme racecar> the "Peanuts" 1966 Ford LTD with FOUR doors no less and and a vinyl top!

Correct on Sheldon Konblett and the Peanuts car. Didn't think about him getting out of Compton ;)

He was the founder of Service Center chain of parts stores, which is where Doug Herbert got his start.
