PPI ever kill a deal?

    If you have ever been in the market for a used F430 and had a full PPI performed, have the results of the PPI ever made you decide not to go through with the purchase?

    What flaws were discovered during the PPI that made you change you mind?

    Or has the PPI uncovered minor, correctible problems that you used for further negotiation leverage?

    What kinds of flaws are terminal and incurable? Are there any problems that were not covered by warranty or campaigns that continue to plague F430’s and aggravate you by going unfixed?

    There have been more than 45 campaigns on the F430, some very minor and other major. Will the PPI reveal which campaigns have been done?

    Great questions. When purchasing a car from a F dealer isn't the PPI kind of a conflict of interest. Or everything has to be totally exposed? Does anyone ever have two PPI done to double check the dealer?

    I am selling my black Stradale with fresh 15k and 30k services completed less than 50 miles ago and people are still wanting me to PPI the car. It is a no story car and I am the 2nd owner and was just at the dealer 2 weeks ago. Does anyone know what would be done during a PPI that wouldnt be done during both 15k and 30k services?

    Yes, and that's why a PPI has to be done by a 3rd party unrelated to the sale of the car. I think that's what you're asking.

    I think it depends on who you are buying the car from, there many on here that can give you sellers that would never offer a car that had a story. I know my local dealer would not.

    Not a 430, but I fell in love with a 456 a few years back. I was crushed by the results of Brian's (Rifledriver) thorough PPI because I really wanted that car! In addition to the warts I was willing to accept, Brian found that the engine was severely wounded (horrible leakage on several cylinders) and that the entire back half of the car had been repainted. Since I was looking at at least $10k of engine work, the PPI killed that deal.

    Someone more knowledgeable than I can let us know if either a compression test or leak down test is part of routine service.

    Possibly a compression test, clutch wear numbers, tire and brake inspections. I'm also guessing making sure the A/C, radio (if there is one), blinkers, head lights, brake lights all function properly. I'm sure there's lots more but we all know that there's nothing cheap on one of these cars.

    Yes, but not a 430. I was looking at a used 360, had a PPI done and the report showed far too many things my inexperienced eye wouldn't have caught.

    I sent that car back, brought another car (from the same seller to the same tester) and this 2nd car passed with no issues and it was a no-issues car the entire time I owned it.

    Always have a PPI done. By comparison to the potential repairs, it's a bargain at twice the price.

    Well, I just bought a 360, the PPI suggested about $1k of work and rear tires replaced.

    Work done and tires replaced by seller.

    Worked for me.

    I think that is ultimate value of a PPI, especially on an older car with more years of history for things to have gone wrong. I've worked with Brian and trust his judgment so when he said those words, horrible, wounded, I agree it was time to get out.

    On a newer F430 the value of a PPI is less significant since the car is still under warranty and all the campaigns have fixed all know faults.

    I was purchasing a car and the Ferrari dealer found the vin plate missing -- you bet that killed the deal.

    These days I tell the seller that the purchase is contingent upon my mechanic giving me the ok

    I passed on 1 BMW M5 bcus my mechanic said it was crap

    Thats the only time I've had a PPI kill a deal

    I had another deal on an F that there were title issues but those were cleaned up before I bought it

    Late model cars that are for sale tend to far more often be owned by those that buy the car knowing they will be selling it soon to buy another. That type of owner, contrary to the protestations of most dealers, treat the car like a rental or worse. That is most often the worst period of the cars life, being owned by someone that just does not care. Many things can be damaged, many long term problems can be set in motion by such an owner and is not the car you want, warranty or not. Warranty only covers things that break and have not been subject to abuse. It also does not cover wear and tear.


    Every single month we get involved with a car that has been recently bought without a PPI or one done badly in an effort to save money. I have a car here right now that is uncomfortably close to a six figure bill for that reason and have an F40 here with very low mileage and very serious and expensive engine trouble for the same reason.

    There is no good reason EVER to buy one of these cars without getting an outstanding PPI done. At the LEAST......THE VERY LEAST it will do is give you ammunition to negotiate a better price, paying for the PPI.


    Someone please....tell us where the downside is to getting a good PPI?

    i did a ppi on a red 360 in dallas price was good and it was at a porsche dealer. Car looked great but when the F dealer did the ppi they found out the clutch was gone. Panels were re painted reverse didnt work and was due for service. many problems. they offered me 10,000 off and I walked from the deal. best 400 i ever spent
