I'm partial to Canon and Sony, but willing to try other brands...

    What's good these days? Hi-def? Hard-disk based?

I've tried the dvd-based ones and found they compress the vid so bad it turns crappy later when trying to edit...at least that was my impression.

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations feel free to post them....I'm leaning toward another 3-ccd mini-dv but hoping something a little cheaper will fit the bill.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    What'cha wanna do with it?....

    - Shooting "wildlife" in Alaska or Algeria is a lot different to:
    - Mounting it in a car for a "track day" to
    - Shooting porn! ;)

I can probably help with the 1st and 2nd options, but someone else will need to jump in on the porn front :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Canon HV40 is awesome. True, no-pulldown BS 24p, and of course no more mini dv tapes to deal with although some people still prefer the security of something physical. low light sensitivity is exceptional for a camcorder in this segment.

The Panasonic HDC series with the real focus ring as opposed to some ridiculous button are also very cool but will stretch your budget by a few hundred dollars.

If you need a porn cam, I suggest something weather resistant.

I think you're confusing your camcorders. The HV40 is the successor to the HV20 and HV30 which use minidv tapes to record HDV.

Their HF line uses hard drives or sd cards.
