Hong Kong probably has a crazier system to other countries. And not surprising, considering HK has the highest Ferrari-per-capita than any other country.

The 'list' in HK is very real, and many customers paid deposit for the 'F430 Replacement' (as it was called then), when they picked up the F430 years ago!

I know im #97 in line, provided some celebrity doesnt sweet talk the manager into getting one sooner.

I'm also told I need to wait until 2013. Can anyone confirm this?

If i were you guys, I wouldn't bother too much about these lists. Ferrari and its dealers like to tease customers, competitors and the street by making everyone believe that they have an incredible wait list on every model, but the fact is every time I ordered a Ferrari (458 will be my 5th), I was told the first year of production was already sold and, miracle, mine arrived 3-4 months later. Sure they made an effort to accommodate my needs !

The "list" is a myth. It's just a bunch of names that the dealer will use to make contact when his allocation comes in. It's helpful to him to push for confirmation of his quota or negotiate for more or less cars to be assigned to him.

Getting on the list only puts you in the dealer's mind. Until he gets his allocation, delivery schedule, and costs he can't sell anything and should not be taking deposits in my opinion for something he cannot sell.

I wouldn't be surprised if you had to wait until 2013 if you are 97th on the list here, that would mean IMSS gets about 30 something cars per year which sounds right. They have a lot of deposits in the bank dont they.

The list is long. Once you are so far down the list who knows about 2013 or whenever - IMSS doesn't know for sure how many cars they will get and there will be movement above you with VVIP's - celebrities or otherwise. Even Ferrari Asia Pacific doesn't know for sure for sure how many cars the region will get.

Only way you can move up the list is to buy a used car (IMSS has lots in stock) on the understanding that you will trade it back against a 458 Italia at a higher place on the list than you are now. The loss on the car that you don't really want is the price of moving up on the list. Others will do this and that will move you even lower if you sit and wait. Supply and demand...

You are correct - the list in HK is backed up by real cash deposits. I have as many as 5 deposits with IMSS at any point in time. I feel like the Fed...

After 11 cars in 7 years, (and a dozen or more cars I sent buyers for), from my dealer, I have found that lists are different for each dealer, and very few actually use them as anything other than an idea of how many cars they might be able to sell. I have told my dealer I'll probably want one, but I will wait and see the car in person before I decide. I also have an interest in the SLS, since I already own 2 pretty raw sports cars, and not sure if I want a 3rd.

If I want a 458 and I haven't made a cash deposit to be on a list, I presume the 'list' is meaningless.

If you're a dealer and someone wants a 458 and hasn't made a case deposit, the dealer won't take them seriously, may put them on some meaningless wait and see 'list'.

If a dealer can't take a deposit, its all smoke and mirrors, any list you may be on means nothing, prefered prior owners will get first pick.

Ferrari dealers across the country are licking their chops over the 458, they'll be able to sell this car for huge profits.

i am not so sure of this. in today's economy, i suspect more dealers will be happy to sell the car at sticker.

With 16Ms and Scuderias sitting at dealerships unsold, the days of the long wait are likely over. I am sure the first years production of the 458 will be hard to get unless onie is a prior buyer or someone willing to pay over list. Maybe by the 2nd or 3rd model year, I think they could likely be bought at MSRP without much waiting.

A Belgian Ferrari dealer has started taking deposits for the 458 Italia. The conditions are that you pay 45.000 euro's ($65,500) in advance and in about 6 months you get too choose your paintwork. Estimate delivery is due for march 2012.

    2012??
Seems strange, considering the number of 430's they made in recent years, and the number of unsold cars all around the globe..

The deposit is a nice bonus for the dealers... sell a few and have some extra money to cover their inventory. It wouldn't surprise me that the waitinglists will fade away this year..

Its all a part of the myth.
I'd go for the classic instead of a car that you will see on every Monaco-streetcorner in a couple of months.

    just my thoughts....
