    Sorry for anybody who was following this thread, I had a family bereavement in early June and that took precedence, hence the lack of updates.

    Consequently I got a big batch of pictures today, showing the car leap forward through the marker coats, primer coats, blocking down, wet primer into a very striking shade of red, which I hope will tone down a bit by the time the final top coats are applied.

    The finish is looking very promising, the reflections in the repaired areas are very true and even. So once the final paint is on it should look superb.

    The doors and other panels are still to paint, although the primer is done... The body is starting to be reassembled and even just putting hte wheels back on helps the appearance...

    I get it back in August as there is a holiday in between now and finished. I've decided to trailer it home, a 7hr journey after not turning anything for 6 months seems a bit risky. So a very heavy pick up and trailer is the most likely option.

    Well there's been another big gap in the flow of information, part due to a broken computer.

    Finally the end really is in site. The car still has a couple of bits missing, but it doesn't look like much fettling to complete.

    Now it is time to start planning the trip to get the car back... I have a few commitments that will prevent me picking th car up immediately, but I suspect I will be able to call in at SEE RED, Donnington on my way home from Wales 5/6th Sept.

    I got more pictures today and its is looking more and more like a very new car. As predicted the leather work is looking tired, but that is another project.

    And I can say that it looks even better in the flesh, as I saw when I dropped my 308 off to Al yesterday. You can just see the nose of mine to the left of yours in one of the pics above.

    Pheww that is reassuring! It is too far to pop down myself and see how Alun is getting on myself.

    Actually I had no doubts. It might have taken a little bit longer that first planned, but the workmanship and perserverence shown by Alun is fantastic.

    So is your 308 the next restoration thread? Perhaps FerrariChat UK region needs an AlsaAutomotive sub-section? You know 'events'... 'backroom lounge'... and naked cars aka. 'AlsaAutomotive'...



    NOTE: I see he still has the Escort Cosworth shell sitting under polythene in the corner. That was finished last year, because it was the paint finish on that car that convinced me I was in the right workshop. Perhaps the owner doesn't want it back?!

    Hi David,

    Yep, I was admiring the finish up close and then Al said, yes needs another polish! A true craftsman, we are in very safe hands.

    I am planning to do a thread for mine similar to this one, I'll stick it in the new Alsaautomotive section when it's ready!

    The Cosworth is still there, yes, can't quite remember what Al said, something about the owner not being ready to collect it yet. The blue/purple paint looks quite something - difficult to show accurately in pictures.

    Just a handful of jobs left to do. Door stripes, boot lid badge, front grilles and and clean(!).


    I will be afraid to take this outside, it might rain on it, or a fly might commit suicide against it.

    Perhaps I'll put a carpet in the garage and move the telly and an easy chair into the workshop... Then I can have a nice cup of Coco and look at it all evening.

    I have been to Als workshop a number of times, it never ceases to amaze me the amount of skill and dedication Al puts into his work, he still cant make a decent coffee though :)

    Not quite sure.


    Certainly it will NOT be by trailer. I now have a lot of bitter experience with trailers, both personnaly and at work. I was ignorant of the dangers (as are most people).

    When I was on the way to collect this 308 (when I originally bought it) I was hit by a Peugeot 106 causing me to jack-knive on the M25. Nobody hurt, but the Mondeo was written off, as was the Peugeot, trailer and about 15mtrs of centre reserve barriers!!! It was amazing how the unladen trailer threw the Mondeo around.

    I then moved to a job where we were towing every day with Hi-Lux 4x4, Ford Blazers 4x4 and LandRover Defenders. We had a Ford Blazer jacknived and turned over. We had the LandRover jacknived and the towing gear ripped clean off the chassis. We nearly lost the towing assembly off the SAME Defender after it had been repaired and we had the towing gear sheared on a Ford Transit.

    I now know much more about towing capacities. There is a legal towing capacity, then there is the safe capacity - DO NOT CONFUSE THESE. For safety towing the trailer MUST not exceed 80% the weight of the towing vehicle and ideally should be under 75%.

    So Ferrari 1350Kg, Trailer 650Kg you would need a towing vehicle of 2500Kg. A Range Rover is just good enough and Defender is nowhere near, but both has a legal towing capacity of 3500Kg - which is a joke.

    I was looking at a Transit Pickup, and adding 1 tonne of ballast in the form of a bulk bag of gravel to stabilise it, but the hire companies will not hire for towing purposes as the insurance will not cover this use. Does that not tell you something?

    So people think long and hard before moving a car on a car trailer. Short distances and low speeds are okay, but not long runs over 50mph. Please.



    So option 2 was a self drive 7.5tonne slide bed recovery wagon, ideal. Problem 1 - operators license. I finally got written confirmation from VOSA that they would not enforce the requirements of HGV operators' license for a private hire. Good so far! Vehicle could be hired for £80/day, but that is vehicle only with no insurance. As a private individual I can not get insurance for a hired vehicle. GAME OVER.


    So I am left with hiring a vehicle mover to go get it and hope he treats it with respect. Or drive it back 7 hours to home, after not turning a wheel for 7 months. Frankly I'm not keen on either option, but the hired haulier makes more sense.

    A bit of a dilema?, i would not like to drive it seven hours especially with the weather here right now, i guess the haulier is the best bet then?

    Took the day off and drove down from Glasgow (work) to Alun's workshop... 8 hours!!! Still the car is looking fantastic.

    I needs:
    a thorough clean inside (paint dust)
    the trim wrangled to tidy up the parcel shelf
    the engine bay cleaned of paint dust
    and so paint dust cleaned off the panels.

    But WOW what a job. The repairs are utterly smooth to the touch and colour is exactly right. Excellent and well worth the wait.

    I'm on a WiFi hotspot so I'll only post a couple of pictures now (rest later), but my camera isn't doing it justice anyhow.

    Nice clean engine bay too. He's a top bloke is Alun.

    Did you all get home okay?

    In the engine bay pic, I am wondering where your water header tank is. I can see the oil reservoir for the dry sump engine on the right, and normally on the left there is a water header tank where you can top up if necessary.

    Just curious...
