File the claim and move on.....

If your wife had hit the back of the other car (or they reversed into her) then it wouldn't seem so alarming.... It's reads like a Keystone Cops set up, wrong end of the car gets hit!

I can't believe no one's asked this yet, but do you and your wife have any witnesses to contradict any bull that might be in the report? I hope so.

In Michigan the insurance laws work a little differently. We are a 'no fault' state so Jeff would call his insurance company, provide them with the police report of the accident then take his car to the body shop for repair. His insurance would cover the damage to his car and her insurance would cover the damage to her car. If Jeff carries 'broad form collision' on his car and his wife was not listed at fault on the accident report his insurance company will waive off the deductible so it won't cost him a thing to have it repaired and his premiums should not go up although they wouldn't go up with standard deductibles either.

Did you ask him if that mean the cruisers won't be swinging by your place and they'll stop calling?

Jeff & Karen, get a lawyer ASAP and have him contact the head of the State Troopers and that city's Sheriff. Also contact your local news agencies, this is VERY IMPORTANT that a very bright light is shed on this situation. Smells to me of corruption and fraud. New agencies have a way of shining a light on this which may assist you in a proper outcome. Also contact your government representatives, an while they will probably do nothing, if they fail to act upon finding of facts this will show badly on their part and let them know this fact because it could be a factor when they come up for re-election.

ALWAYS CARRY AN AUDIO/VIDEO RECORDING DEVICE WITH YOU AND ALWAYS RECORD IN SITUATIONS LIKE THIS AND WHEN YOU INTERACT WITH THE POLICE OR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

+100 The location of the damage to your wife's car is pretty-much all the information the insurance Companies are going to need to 'find fault' on this one. Rear-end damage to a stopped car at an intersection? This is a case-closed, no-brainer. Young driver involved? Young driver was behind the wheel of the car with FRONT-end damage? Case Double-Closed.

If you're by yourself and not unless you have the camera mounted in the car how do you propose this working?

"Scuseme orifice, stay right there until I set up my video tripod for filming. Oh, and don't say anything or kick my @ss until the camera's rolling, please."

I was wondering the same thing. Would you suggest holding a video camera the entire time you interact with LEOs??? I would imagine they wouldn't take too kindly to that gesture...

You may do it that time, but the Police will surely catch you one day violating a law and you will not have that camera on hand. Also, just remember, at least where I live, the Police have "personal space." If you get within that personal space, they consider that threatening and more than likely will be dealt with. So if you are going to do that, stand farrrrrrrrr away.

What everyone fails to understand is that just like every profession, there are a couple of bad apples that make the whole bunch look bad, but in reality, the Police provide a service that many CAN'T and WON'T do because they are afraid, or don't get paid enough, the list can go on. You don't know what that Officer just saw prior to your fender bender, such as a suicide, a dead child, so other ghastly sight. So be understanding when one tells you to move your car and he snaps at you when you decide to question him or her.

I'm not saying this "off duty" Officer was right or wrong, just food for thought.

Got a cell phone? If so, it may have a movie mode. Two or three clicks at most and you are 'good to go'. Remember the LEO who shot a guy in the subway and because a few others used their cell phones the official LEO story was found to be VERY questionable and.... So without the video proof the LEOs may have gotten away with shooting what appears to be a compliant person who was then a victim of their apparent abuse of power.

First of all, Thankfully your wife is not injured. Sorry about your wife's car : (

DISCLAIMER: I am a big supporter of Law Enforcement in my area.

The off-duty officer was way out of line. I know that you and your wife want a proper apology AND DESERVE ONE, but at what cost?

The officer had his overbearing, ball busting wench of wife breathing down his neck. He made a mistake....He's only human.....Obviously, he is a beaten down man who needs to use his authority to abuse others as he is abused by his nemesis...I mean wife.

IMVHO, what he did doesn't warrant getting Lawyers involved.....It was WRONG, MEAN, and STUPID, but why take on the State Police when in the end nothing will be gained other than a few new enemies.......Ain't worth it to me.

    Amen.

Me too, have had MANY good friends who are/were LEOs and in the mil.

    Proper and fair justice.

You know this for fact? Please explain.

So two wrongs make a right how? Seriously, he is an accomplice to a crime. That is ok with you how?

    Why not?

And caused property damage and now may also cause deception on an accident report.

He is not taking on the State Troopers. He is simply asking for fair and honest justice within the judicial system on the person who caused an accident. A simple exchange of insurance would suffice and case closed.... yet once one starts to deceive, a web of lies they weave. Obvioiusly there is no need for a court case, if both parties are honest. Sadly, one of the parties seem to not be at this point.

I get what you're saying but the bottom line is the filming needs to be done discreetly some how if you do it yourself. Camera mounted somewhere etc. To whip out a cell phone on the guy is going to wind up with the cop smashing it or worse. It's another thing to be a bystander pulling out a camera for filming as things are going down. I'd be curious if there's some better ideas for recording an incident more discreetly?
