A friend of mine just bought an M6 and says it's similar to the F1 transmission as an automatic manual. He sent me the following that says that it changes in 50 ms. That is faster than the 60 ms of the F1???

    Any merit to this??

"The SMG system in the current M3 (SMG II) is already very fast but the new seven-speed SMG in the M6 (SMG III) is 20 per cent quicker still. To put this in perspective the new gearbox can make changes in 50 milliseconds while a seasoned driver will take around half a second with a normal manual gearbox.

Other features of the new SMG gearbox include:

    · Gearchange lights and engine revolutions graphic in the Head-up Display (HUD).

    · SMG includes a launch control system that gives perfect F1-style starts from zero to maximum speed. (Programme six in S mode)"

m3 doesn't have smg II it has the new dual clutch (DCT) and is lightning fast. much like the 458 will have.

I believe that the new M3 is still available with the SMG II........The DCT is nice but I prefer the F1 by far......The F1 especially the "superfast" is so much more of a natural feel to me.

It feels like a manual to me, not a slushbox like some of the dual clutch transmissions I have driven. The DSG, DCT, and SMG all are amazing technical achievements but compared to the latest F1's they pale in comparison. They are simply boring after a while and lack the feel that I expect out of a sports car.

I CANT WAIT to drive the 458 to see how Ferrari does a Dual Clutch in their mid engined beast........The California is a blast to drive, the dual clutch matches the character of the car perfectly......In the 458 I'm just hoping it will be a bit more intense, I have a feeling it will be just right.

nope, 6 speed manual or 7 speed dct.

the dct has a bunch of different settings that definitely give you a great feel of changing gears. sure you can put it into auto mode with all the comfort settings and it'd be boring as all hell, but then why get the car?

If that's the case, then why is Ferrari switching to dual-clutch transmissions with the 458 (and California)? Dual clutch transmissions are the future, the Ferrari F1 transmission is going to go the way of the dodo.

F1 Superfast is quicker than all of ze German's shift times by far. And, as Ferrari have the new double clutch, we'll see they are quicker still...

The fact that they've abandoned the F1 for dual clutch transmissions is all you need to know about the technology. As I said earlier--dual clutch transmissions are the future--the F1 is going the way of the dodo.

Have you driven a Superfast F1 and a DCT? I have. I still like the F1 better.

I agree 100% that DCT's are not only the transmission of the future but they are already here. I drove the California and thought it was amazing, but I still like the F1 Superfast better.

I'm confident that the "feel" of the DCT in the 458 will be stellar. I'm just hoping it feels similar to the Superfast. There's something so.......uhh..........natural, native, brilliant, and has the feel of a "Manual" just without a foot clutch.

I'm certainly not arguing the "feel" of the technology, just which way the technology is going. When it comes to feel, I like both the F1 and DCT, but honestly I still prefer a traditional 3-pedal manual. :)

I totally get it my friend. I have a 997 TT with 3 pedals and it's actually my favorite element of the car.
