DO NOT LET OTHERS DRIVE YOUR FERRARI

I'm sorry this happened to you. I have let many people drive my 355, never a problem. You do have to take the role of the driving instructor though. If you can handle your own car then you know the limits and never let people approach it. If an instructor can keep people from crashing their cars on a track day then an adept 355 driver can keep even a complete moron from crashing their car.

Letting a friend that does not own his own 355 drive 100 mph is well......as some would say: the blind leading the blind.

Sorry to be so brutal because the whole thing sucks. I feel for you.

The other side of the coin is, if he had even a minor incident in your car - even if it's someone else's fault - then I'm sure he'd never forgive himself either. It's probably not a good idea for anyone to drive a Ferrari they don't own themselves.

As much as I'm eager to drive a Ferrari for the first time, realistically I think it wisest to wait until I'm buying my own. Until then, if anyone wants to offer me a passenger ride in a Ferrari - I've never had one of those yet! Actually, I've been thinking it'd be cool to be dropped off at my wedding (in late April / early May) in a Ferrari - preferably a 348... the search begins!

Of course, its your car so you can decide what you will, but I don't think you can make an across the board statement that implies that ALL friends will trash your car. It depends on the "friend." Don't we all have friends we could trust with our very life, and other friends to whom we wouldn't lend our chainsaw? Depends on the friend. But still, I feel your pain. Sorry for your loss.

How close you are as friends will merely play a role in the outcome when things go bad.

I personally base my limits on what someone can or can't do in my car soley on their driving skills.

My friends and I have owned, driven, and tracked many cars. We will swap keys in a second. Even the most skilled driver recognizes that I shouldn't push my friends AWD Turbo 911 to the limit. Heck I shouldn't do that on the street at all. But if I'm feeling spirited then 70% of the limit on a desolate road is pushing and we are both aware of the risk involved.

Letting someone test the limit ( and clearly blowing past it in this scenario) in your 375 HP, quick steering, tail happy, mid engine 355 on the street is insane.

I've asked several friends if they would like to drive my car, most say "NO WAY" , but they truly appreicate the offer - those that do drive it share in my good fortune - no amount of money could replace that

 

There is nothing in your fact pattern that would prevent you from suing him for negligence. The bottom line is that he took possession of your property, treated said property with malice and reckless disregard which resulted in damages to you. Why not play turnabout?
