Well it had to happen one time or another ****!!!!!!! On a cruise today drove to another town about 2hrs away car ran amazing until 3km left, then I noticed when I hit the pedal I had a loss of power not huge but noticeable. I looked to see if any warning lights were on and nothing, I looked for smoke nothing, checked the temp normal, oil temp normal then I noticed the oil pressure was down to 70lbs when it normally is at 100 or 120. I rev the engine and the pressure slightly goes up. I pull into a gas station turn it off fuel up turn it on and now she starts to puff out what looks like blue smoke and she is running rough Idle like I am only firring on 6 instead 8 cylinders. Got the car towed back late tonight started her up and same thing smoke rough idle LIKE ONLY ON 6 CYLINDERS no ecu warning. Opinions, head gasket, burnt cylinder ????????? HELP
Is there any possibility that the oil is overfull? If it was my car, I'd check the oil level first, then pull the air filter to see if the engine is blowing oil into the filter housing through the vent hoses, then pull the spark plugs to see if any of them are obviously oil-fouled. If you find any plugs fouled, then the next step is a compression/leakdown test. In a "best case" scenario, the problem will be that the oil is getting into the combustion chambers through the intake system, rather than past the piston rings or valve guides, and it will be easy to correct. Good luck to you!
That sucks!!! Sorry to hear about your car.... Hopefully it's an easy fix and your back on the road soon.
sounds like something that hapened to me once.... turned out to be a couple of fouled spark plugs. Changed plugs and viola! all was right in the world again. JD
70-85 is normal, 100-120 being normal indicates either a bad sender, a bad pop-off valve, or an oil that is way to heavy for the car. What oil is in the car? <manufacture> <brand> <weight> <lable:: SM, SL, SK, SJ,...> When was the last time you checked the oil level? What WAS the oil temp at the moment you actually looked? {Note, you should look at it at least once a minute} What was the water temp? How hard were you running it when this happened? Looks like a new set of plugs is the minimum you are in for.
Once my engine is all warmed up my oil pressure runs just slightly above 70lbs. The only time it's where you describe it is upon cold engine start up. Kai
Sorry to read this Roberto, lets hope it's minor... +1 on the oil pressure, sounds like yours has been running high brother....
This is the reason why I love my Ferrari is because of the Brotherhood nothing like it in the world Well I wonder if you are correct here is the reason why. The night before the trip I checked and double checked everything plugs, wires coolant and the oil level which I thought was a little low. Now when I checked the oil we had just come back from a small drive but now that I think about it maybe the oil was not warmed up enough so it gave me a low indication so I topped it to full therefore maybe overfilling. Now my question is I drove for 1 1/2 hrs with no problems shouldn't I have noticed something by that time? But when it did happen was right after a very spirited drive stretch of road of which I had her at 7000rmp for a period of time( I love Sask roads ). The smoke only after fill up makes sense since the oil would of sat and filled the intake. Now being that this is the problem of which I am almost certain it is what would be the solution to clean her up? After looking properly I realized I was wrong on the pressure it normally reads 70 steady 80/90 on hard load and 100 when raved hard. The oil I use Lubro Molly 5W-40 quite good I have always used it on all my cars.
We have seen the situation many times where someone grossly overfills the oil tank and almost immediately the engine starts blowing smoke out the exhaust. In these cases, it's quite obvious where the problem is, as the air filter housing collects a great deal of oil that has blown through the vent hoses. Ordinarilly a car in that condition wouldn't be driven far. I'm wondering if perhaps your oil was only slightly overfull, and it took a fair bit of driving, and some high RPM's, before enough oil got into the intake to cause a problem. It doesn't really seem likely that a problem with the rings or valve guides would come on that suddenly. A head gasket could blow out quickly, but I haven't read that head gaskets are a common problem on 348's, and I don't think a blown gasket would be associated with blue smoke. Also, I don't think a timing belt issue would result in blue smoke. For starters, just open up the air filter housing (easy) and see if there is oil in there. Look under the filter element. Shouldn't be any. If you DO find oil in there, you'll need a new filter, you'll need to drain the excess out of the tank, you'll need to clean out the vent hoses, and you may need to replace your spark plugs. Hope that's all it is!
Good luck for tracking down the problem Roberto. I can't help, but am sending good thoughts your way. All the best, Andrew.
Thanks boys I do appreciate it, this is why the Brotherhood works So my mechanic and I looked at her today and as you suspected Miltonian I think I only slightly over filled the reservoir and only after very high sustained rmp drive did the oil flow into my intake. Good news is no oil in my air filter it was starting to trickle in but I stopped it in time. The plugs were coated not to bad but enough for some rough idle. I have a new set arriving tomorrow, I will clean all I can and start her up. Question should I just run her until the remainder excess oil burns off ? If I do that wouldn't it coat my new plugs ? Should i drain some oil out clean the old plugs then burn off the excess before I install new plugs ? What other things should I be looking for or change ? should I clean out my intakes or let it run it's coarse? Am I asking too many questions ? Do people get annoyed when I do ? How fast does a cheetah go ? If a train left the station at 2 p.m and a car left the same station at 3 p.m who is driving the car ?
Glad to hear its nothing terminal mate. I would... 1-Drain a little oil first 2-Remove hoses from air filter box to throttle body's. Clean hoses, throttle body's and air filter box. 3-Remove old plugs, leave them out and crank the engine to push any oil excess oil out. Even if any comes out? 4-Fit new plugs, start her up, get her warm then shut down and re-check engine oil level. If there is ANY oil that comes while you crank, be sure you clean it up before you start the car. Because the oil will go all over your exhaust manifolds. It wont catch fire, but ya just never know. Thats what I would do mate. When you DO get her back on the road, take her for a nice long drive to burn out any excess oil that you couldnt clean out of the hoses etc.
Answer to the last few questions: 1) No, not annoyed that you're asking too many questions 2) Cheetah runs 70 mph 3) Hopefully you are driving the car leaving the station at 3, and if it's your car (after this over-fill business is cleared up) you should catch the train within an hour Hope this helps. John
Thanks my friend I cleaned her up today but waiting till tomorow to fire her up, I took pics will post. Bwahahahahahahahahaha
