Hey guys, My 2004 F1 575M, with a Tubi, makes a noise when shifting and I am not sure if its normal. It is a low growling, muffled pop that seems to happen underneath the car whenever I shift between gears (both in manual and auto). It is sometimes notably loud (at least to me) and louder when engine is not warmed up. My friend was driving with me the other day (his first time in my car) and asked me what that noise was, he asked if I was backfiring. I dont think it is a backfiring type of loud but its noticeable to say the least. It seems to take place underneath in the middle of the car. It sounds like air and not gears. do your 550s and 575s make this noise?

Derek- On some of the louder aftermarket systems, like a Tubi with the late model 575M center straight pipes (after assembly number 51797) , you will get a bark on upshifts and burbling and popping on downshifts as air is pulled in and mixes with the hot exhaust gasses. The Tubi was actually designed to work with the early 575M or 550 central muffler/resonator and can be loud with straight center pipes.

The Novitec system I had made a beautiful bark on upshifts.

If you think you have an exhaust leak, it should be relatively easy to find. Since each side of your exhaust is completely independent from the other, simply clamp a rag over the two exhaust tips and see if you can hear a leak at the exhaust system joints. Be careful not to burn yourself.

Taz, great words to describe the noises, "bark on upshifts" and "burbling and popping on downshifts". Those are the exact sounds. Should I look into another system? such as the Novitec system you mentioned? also, do the sounds I hear effect the cars performance as engine being less efficient at all?

Derek- I love those sounds. If you will not get in trouble with your neighbors or the cops, I would keep what you have. I would still have my Novitec system, which was even louder than your Tubi, except I found a good deal ($399) for an HGTC system.

On really low back pressure exhaust systems, when you let off on the throttle, even during an F1 Sport upshift, the partial vacuum generated pulls in outside air. That cool air mixes with the hot exhaust gasses and causes all those glorious noises you hear. Normal exhaust systems have too much back pressure to allow any cold air to be ingested.

Bark on upshift and burble and pop on trailing throttle, that is how a big V12 should sound.

fwiw the stock exhaust has no burbling or barking, so if you don't want that then look for used stock exhaust, should be plenty out there. I'm using mine for a doorstop
