I'm a pround new 2002 360 spyder owner and really excited about the car. This is my first Ferrari. The minute I drove the car, I realized something was wrong with the clutch. It was bucking and the engine would rev high and the car was not taking off. Upon bringing it to the local dealer for a check up, I was told the clutch was 167% worn. They took the clutch apart and confirmed that the thrust bearing and seals need to be replaced also. They quoted me $5,500 to do the work. Does this seem accurate?

Does anyone know how long a clutch is suppossed to last? I have 18,000 miles on the car and I think this is the original clutch. Thanks!!

    price quoted is fair
18k miles is also about right, depending on how it was driven
I get 52k out of my 360 (manual) before I needed a new clutch

Depending on a variety of factors, that is all within reasonable boundaries.

The usual first symptom of a worn F1 clutch is occasional dropping into neutral upon normal shift request, but excessive slippage will occur when it becomes well and truly worn out. 18K miles is close to average F1 clutch life although it can be shorter with abusive driving habits and much longer with proper technique. That price sounds about right for a thorough job (clutch, flywheel, TO bearing, seals, etc.) at a dealer. It's important for a factory trained and equipped technician to install and adjust the F1 clutch for proper operation and clutch life.

Get that clutch fixed and drive the crap out of it. Great car my man!

I think it sucks you got stuck with that problem right out of the gate. Did you get a PPI before purchase? was it from a dealer?

Does they recommend you to change the Flywheel, the magnet or the steel flange?
You can find a new original clutch system for less than $1,400.00 and the hill engineering thrust bearing for around $500.00. (Ferrparts).
That means that they will charge you $3,600.00 on labor if they are not included the other parts I mentioned.
It depends on you if you feel more save with the dealer than use a Ferrari Mechanic that can do the job.

    Good luck!!

Incidentally, Rifledriver has reported problems with the HE throw-out bearing. You might also check with others here and see if they recommend changing the F1 clutch position sensor as well.

    Price is in the ballpark.

167% recorded clutch wear can only mean one thing. A 360 will only go to about 80% recorded clutch wear before it malfunctions so much it is undriveable. It is in fact on at least its second clutch and the first was replaced by someone who did not know what he was doing and was not equipped to properly change the clutch. The entire life of the last clutch was spent with it not working properly for that reason. Sorry to say but you bought a car that has probably spent its life being serviced by the low bidder and was owned by....shall we say an overly thrifty owner.

Tell me, how did none of this show up during the PPI process?

Thanks guys for all the great feedback! I appreciate it!!

They are working on the clutch today (at the Ferrari dealer) so I'm confident they will get it done properly. You're correct about the last installer not knowing his ass from his elbow. The dealer told me that this was installed incorrectly. I attached a few pictures of the clutch...aparently it's in bad shape. And yes, all of the seals are going to be changed and updated. Dealer told me that the orange seals are the "old style" and will be updated with the "blue scaper seal".

As for my pre-inspection of the car, I did take a bit of a "stupid" gamble and I bought the car from a dealer in Florida without driving it. However, he told me that everything was great mechanically and there were no issues. Clearly, he lied or didn't know. But, after me screaming for a few minutes and threating to cancel the entire deal and send the car back, he will be paying for the clutch. At least, at this point he said he would.

Everything else checked out pretty good, for the most part. Some minor things like the front right tie rod was loose and the wheel alignment was screwd up. Also, the car only came with one key and remote. The dealer said that it's $700 for the remote and $300 for the key...yikes!!!

Anyway, I'm still excited and can't wait to get behind the wheel and go nuts!!

I'm happy for you that dealer will cover the cost of the clutch!.
It sucks that you have to wait when you recently bought the car, I know you feel frustrated.

After all is set up you will have a nice ride and I hope you enjoy it.

P.D. Please put the many miles you can to that bastard, they born to be driven!!

Please don't take me for a snob, but those photos where taken at a Ferrari dealer's shop? Those hands don't look like the hands of a professional Ferrari mechanic. Most high end Ferrari techs have very clean hands.
