I need to get some antivirus software for our systems. Any recomendations?
http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition?cmpid=fr_bn_free_670 This free version doesn't work on servers and such, you have to get the pay variant for that.
But definitely the best available Nod32 by Eset. A tiny footprint, and world leading protection. A definite winning package.
Well, by systems do you mean individual computers or an entire network? We use esafe (in addition to the cisco firewall) to sit between our network and the internet. It is pricy, but very effective, and very granular. See: http://www.aladdin.com/esafe/default.aspx
I've been recommending Avast or AVG but yesterday M$ released their own new free offering and it is getting good reviews. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_essentials/
At work on my software development computer I prefer ClamWin. It's not a real-time anti-virus protection system, which is why I like it -- there's no overhead. I didn't spend big bucks for my 8 processor dev box just to have it bogged down by an anti-virus package. I typically recommend AVG to my friends, for what it's worth.
I really like McAfee for a home network. My Sony came pre-loaded with Norton but that stuff was almost like Adware in its own right and gave me loads of popups trying to get me to upgrade. Couldn't kill the stuff despite doing an uninstall and manually removing files as well. Took a fair bit of time to get it all removed... so I'd avoid Norton if I were you. All the best, Andrew.
Norton is notorious for leaving stuff behind. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool from the symantec web site.
No "issues" but look at your task manager. I no longer have any running copies here so I can't quote numbers but you'll see a process using a fair amount of memory. I'm fussy about stuff like that but most people wouldn't notice any impact. ('specially if they're used to Norton or McAfee)
Thanks for the tip. The time I was having the Norton problem was about 3 years ago, and I ended up calling the McAfee customer service for advice - they were then able to help get rid of it all for me. All the best, Andrew.
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_essentials/ is a free alternative along with running 'mrt' in the Start>Run or an alternative is malwarebytes & superantispyware also Norton 2009 ranks very good with my experience & according to av-comparatives comparison charts.
Avast is better then AVG in the Free stakes. Norton or Eset for $$$ I haven't used the new M$ product but reviews have been mixed so far... still its the right direction for M$ to take http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2353386,00.asp
