I've heard and read that the best year of the QV engines is the 1985. Is there any difference between the '85 and the other 2 earlier years' engines?...or is it just that it 'should be' the best since it was the last year built?

If you mean for US versions, the "difference" is between '83 and '84-'85:

1983 = K-Jet without Lambda, 2 cats, continuous air injection pump, cold start air valve, VLV...

1984 & 1985 = K-Jet with Lambda (so it has an injection ECU and O2 sensor), 1 cat, pulse air injection that only operates during cold-running, no cold start air valve, throttle microswitch...

Actually, QV engines started production in 1982 per OM 248-82.
Steve, was there ever a lambda Euro QV?
Anyone have a link for pdf Euro QV OM?

No, the '82-'85 euro 308QV are all K-Jet without Lambda, no cats.

Unfortunately, it's so big that I can't email you a copy, but I downloaded my copy from the www.ferrariowners.com site (but, lately, I haven't been able to find the OM section there -- does anyone know where to find OMs on that site?).

Here are a few additional engine differences that come to mind:

    - Cam drive bearings are the larger size also used in the 328.
    - Metal pointers & shields instead of fiberglass rear belt covers.

They also have these, but they may have been phased in earlier in the QV run:
    - Separate waterpump & alternator belts
    - Large bearing/small seal water pumps.
    - Cold air plenum between air box & body is quite different.

Once your car is registered, the pdf's are available under tab at the top "My Ferrari" then in the center of the page is 'Car Manuals'. But OM availability is limited to the car you registered.

So how does one temporarily register another car model to get it's manual? And still not violate the sites rules.

If memory serves, the early QV engines had ring(?) problems. After replacing many engines, Ferrari changed things, resulting in better engines sometime after that. Don't really remember the details, but way back when, the word was out on the early QV stuff.

i think you are thinking of the 2v injected cars that had gained an oil burner reputation. never seen anything about early Qvs having these issues. i have a low vin euro Qv built in 1983. the engine has never been opened and it runs superb.

I believe you are correct. In fact it was the 1980 model year specifically that had ring issues. IIRC. The QV motors are fairly reliable.

It was the early 2V injected engines w/the problems, not the QVs.

I had a late 82 2 valve injected 308 that had a big time oil consumption issue.

My '81 drank a quart of oil about every 500 miles, but my '83 QV didn't use any at all.

I just love the sound of the true DUAL exhaust system that was only on 1983 QVs (USA).
